I bought this book on kindle. Being a practising buddhist I thought it may be useful and interesting to my five grandchildren. I was pleasantly surprised that it was useful for me also. Very nicely written , easy steps to follow , can read it from almost any page and the kids love simplicity of putting the ideas into practice.
Well done to the authors for creating this book it really is a little treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless and Needed in Today's World 11 Feb. 2012
By ReikiGirl - Published on
The authors have touched upon something that is critical in today's stressful and sometimes overwhelming world - learning how to "take a moment". They present useful everyday methods for helping children and teens practice awareness, or mindfulness, so that they can balance their emotions no matter how strong those emotions are. For example, teaching a child just to listen to a bird song while walking down the front steps to the car, or noticing a beautiful garden while driving a child to school -- these simple practices will help people of any age to gain a different perspective on whatever is transpiring in their lives. I wish this book had been written when I was growing up, and I will definitely use some of these techniques with my grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Teaching Tool 14 Aug. 2013
By Oceanlight - Published on
I am about three-quarters of the way through this book and I have to say it is a very helpful teaching aid for children and teens - and even for myself as an adult! This book is exactly what it is advertised to be: "...focuses on clear and simple techniques and practices...". I feel that the "poem" style the author has chosen really helps in bringing fundamental concepts of mindfulness into the world that a child (or even a teenager) lives in. The book is chock-full of concrete exercises parents can do with their children or other family members or friends. These range from breathing exercises and a mental focus on the breath; exercises that encourage development of the "observer" within; learning to be still as one observes their own inner and outer worlds; finding "the peaceful place within"; practicing "the one minute pause"; a water blessing; learning to be a "storyteller" - how to create your own story where you are the main character - and more importantly, how to recognize that different responses create different outcomes to their story. The author could have chosen to write about these concepts in a more esoteric way, but doing that was not her purpose in writing this book. It was written as a teaching guide for children and I am personally very excited about that. I have already started doing some of these exercises with my best friend's children, and the whole family loves it! Doing these activities makes you feel stronger from within. And it takes a special talent to be able to convey concepts that aren't naturally concrete in very down-to-earth terms, and to clearly communicate ways to bring mindfulness into the everyday lives of people who are new to it.

This book was essentially a book of poems. I need it as a practitioner and it was not helpful in this capacity

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very informative 4 May 2013

I could have come up with the majority of these ideas just by asking my children to slow down and notice the world around them. It did not deliver when I expected of it. That is teaching actual mindfulness and not just giving short meditative pages.
