Product Description

Review

'This is a well thought-out book, covering all current aspects of the subject in great detail ... This book will be most useful for training purposes and inexperienced literacy coordinators who have been landed with the job of reintroducing drama to their primary school.' - Ruth Bamford, NATE

'The richest section of the book is devoted to drama strategies and conventions. Clear, user-friendly guidelines take the teacher through a resource bank of lively tasks. These are supplemented by a set of practical units connecting the activities to a range of texts. The units are full of writing opportunities and there is a range of supporting material, including photocopiable pictures and activity sheets. If, like me, you need a bit of prompting to venture into the realms of drama, here's your prompt. Step out!' - Huw Thomas, Junior Education

5.0 out of 5 stars A creative book that breaks the mould for literacy teachers., 16 Dec 2002
By A Customer
This book is not like any other on the market. In the words of Jonothan Neelands, who has written the foreword, "it breaks the mould" . It brings together recent and relevant learning theory on the brain and thinking and applies it to the teaching of the National Literacy Strategy through "brain-friendly" drama. This is long overdue. The book gives a clear rationale for drama in relation to children's learning and our current knowledge of how children learn best. Not only does it give clear explanations of a range of drama strategies but it presents the strategies as possible writing frames, linked to the NLS writing requirements. This is an innovative and useful model. The book also provides units of work for each national curriculum year group, that are based on NLS teaching objectives and drama objectives. The units are clearly presented and offer a range of engaging drama based activities. The range of texts are good quality and interesting. Writing opportunities are highlighted within meaningful fictitious contexts. Children will enjoy the activities in these units of work and teachers will be supported to teach for and with creativity. This book will motivate teachers and children and make literacy teaching come alive. The final part of the book are literacy support sheets. These are not old fashioned worksheets but are frames that support and develop the children's own creative thinking and help them to reflect and consolidate their learning. This book is a must for teachers who want to make literacy teaching vibrant and engaging, for themselves and more importantly for children.
