The book covers all the criteria for the City & Guilds 7307 Further & Adult Education Teacher's Certificate that is offered in many English speaking countries. It is arranged in logical sections each covering the main areas of the C&G syllabus and it has been revised and updated in year 2000 to include information about the new UK DfEE FENTO standards and threshold teaching qualification requirements.

As well as preparing candidates for UK teaching qualifications I have found the book very helpful in my current education studies here in Australia. I think that it is a very useful handbook for all candidates progressing to various Certificates and Diplomas in Education (Vocational, TAFE and Higher Education).

Easy to read it leads the novice teacher through the essential stages of communication, principles of learning and teaching, planning and preparing lessons, designing learning resources, course organisation and curriculum development, assessment and evaluation of outcomes and a diverse chapter on the teacher's role. There are appendices on the features of NVQS in training and development and direct links to another of Les Walklin's best selling books: 'Training and Development NVQs that is also published by Nelson Thornes, NVQ portfolio building and NVQ assessor awards; establishing learner needs; writing objective tests; and the acceditation of prior learning. Overall a valuable toolbox covering any teacher's needs.
