Product Description

This book provides an introduction to the theory of positive psychology and a practical guide on how to implement the theory in (primarily secondary) schools. There has recently been an explosion of interest in positive psychology and the teaching of well-being and 'happiness' in PSHE in schools and many teachers are looking for clear information on how to implement these potentially life-changing ideas in the classroom. Wellington College, where Ian Morris is head of philosophy, religion and PSHE, is among the first UK schools to introduce a formal well-being and happiness curriculum developed by the author.

This book is well written, engaging and above all, useful! I wasn't sure what to expect, but the ideas for teachers are excellent and it includes how to approach the subject from a whole school as well as an individual teacher's persepctive. I will definitely be taking this into my school and sharing it with other staff members. So many books written for teachers are either spoon feeding or only theory. The great thing about this is that it combines both theory and practise and makes you want to read it. More importantly it makes you want to go into the classroom and try it out.

In recent years it seems that education has become increasingly focused on academic results and league tables. Where is the well being of the child in all this? This book redresses the balance and offers well researched evidence for bringing resilience, happiness, thriving in ints broadest sense back into the awareness of teachers, both for them and their pupils. It also offers clear guidance and tools as to how this can be integrated into the school curriculum and its ethos. It does not deny the value of a sound academic basis in the school but broadens this to demonstrate how it will also undoubtedly be better achieved if the whole well being and welfare of each child is considered and addressed. It seems to me that parents as well as teachers could benefit from reading and implementing the approach so clearly laid out in this thought provoking. long overdue and essential book.
