More About the Author

Susan Griffith is a freelance editor and writer who has specialized for more than 30 years in writing books and articles about travel, especially working and volunteering abroad. The first edition of her best known book Work Your Way Around the World was researched in 1982 mainly by listening attentively to the stories of travellers met abroad. At that time she had plenty of personal experience of working abroad since she had left her native Canada after doing a degree in English at the University of Toronto to study at Oxford and then decided to stay on working in England. Susan has also been a contributing editor to Transitions Abroad since the early days of its publication and contributes occasional articles to the travel pages of The Independent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great resource for prospective teachers! 27 April 2012
By SH - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I highly - HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who wants to teach aboard. For the record, I'm American, and while some of the information does talk about interviews in the UK or whatever, I've found it to be a HUGELY helpful resource for job-hunting. The GF and I are using the book to look for jobs in Asia, and it's been invaluable.

This book will answer your basic questions about almost any country in the world: what's it like to live there, what are the teaching conditions like, how much will I be paid, what's the cost of living, etc. It also lists reputable schools in each country and gives their contact info - a REALLY REALLY valuable resource!

The information in the book is clear, straightforward and well organized - pretty much the opposite of searching online. I really can't overstate how immensely great this book is - especially compared to the other options: Google searching, forums full of trolls, etc.

Getting a job teaching English abroad could be as easy as:
1. be qualified
2. find a country you like in the book
3. send your resume, etc to schools listed in the book
4. hopefully get some interest, and some offers

Good luck!

Griffith really knows her stuff. She even supplies links and names that I would otherwise not trust as much online. The book discusses opportunities as well as difficulties to overcome and expect.
