More About the Author

Susan Griffith is a freelance editor and writer who has specialized for more than 30 years in writing books and articles about travel, especially working and volunteering abroad. The first edition of her best known book Work Your Way Around the World was researched in 1982 mainly by listening attentively to the stories of travellers met abroad. At that time she had plenty of personal experience of working abroad since she had left her native Canada after doing a degree in English at the University of Toronto to study at Oxford and then decided to stay on working in England. Susan has also been a contributing editor to Transitions Abroad since the early days of its publication and contributes occasional articles to the travel pages of The Independent.

Undoubtedly a wonderful reference, chalk full of essential information, advice, employers and more. I just don't think they are updated much from year to year besides the year on the cover. I know some things have changed in countries ie. Opportunities and pay that aren't noted in updated versions. It be better if they updated them every 2 or 3 years and actually updated them. Worth getting, but perhaps the older cheaper versions.

The TEFLers bible! Susan has yet again provided a excellent reference book for TEFL teachers. I bought this book back in 2005 when I first became a TEFL teacher and it proved extremely useful in finding work in various countries. I have several editions of this book, but this one is the most up-to-date and is an excellent book for wanna be TEFL teachers. A must buy if you're setting off on a TEFL adventure.

Teaching English Abroad 2013 I thought I've been prepared to see how informative and well-organised the book would be since it's been 13th edition, but I have to say I'm still quite surprised to read the actual book! No wonder it's been so popular among the readers. Although I'm quite sure about the sections regarding other countries, but for the section of China, I think it's really fantastic. Will definitely provide very handy tips and advice for whoever would like to teach English in China. Well-done to the writer and her team!

I like how it informs you of things you wouldn't have known and also it lists potential employers to contact when searching for teaching positions.

Credibility Ruined for Me By Ads, Ads and More Ads 23 Feb. 2013

I am very disappointed in this book, especially after all the great reviews I read of the previous version. I was expecting unbiased information on becoming an ESL instructor, what I got is more like a free hotel advertising magazine you pick up at a rest stop. As soon as you open the book you discover that both front and back covers both spread into page and a half glossy full color ads for ESL schools. There is no color in the actual book editorial content itself, but there are many, many, many pages of full color advertising spread throughout the entire book. Even the "personal stories of individual ESL instructors" read like advertisements for schools. One of the countries I was most interested in - Panama - is not even listed in the book at all, although it is a hot spot for ESL training jobs right now. In fairness, if you dig deep through the ads there is some good information in here and some useful contacts. The information may even be unbiased - but it sure doesn't feel that way at all and certainly does not feel worth $26.
