Book Description

1 May 2010
Teaching Dad to Cook Flapjack is a collection of recipes and memories, a delicious food novel where food is embedded within daily family life, as well as an essential, relaxed home cooking manual. Miranda writes ... The book was written after my mother s death ... It started as an informal how-to-do manual for my dad, learning to cook and fend for himself for the first time. A man who could drive a car, tell you about the inside of a camera but couldn t cook his own supper. I started by showing him how to cook some of mum s things. The first recipe in his book was for Chewy Flapjack, which appeals both to his sweet tooth and frequent request for anything to go with a cup of tea? Teaching Dad to Cook Flapjack also contains a blend of ancient Cornish and newer Finnish traditions, with influences from as far afield as Australia. Sometimes the food might be a direct response to a place (Fossil Cake) or even dreamt up as I try and fall asleep (Dulce de Leche Ice Cream).

5.0 out of 5 stars Teaching Dad to Cook Flapjack 15 Oct 2010
By Sue P
Format:Hardcover
This is a wonderful book - full of great recipes, which are obviously well tried and tested. I've tried several and have been delighted with the results. For the first time ever I have successfully made meringues. In fact my eldest son more than favourably compared them with those of his late great Aunty Mary , who made the best meringues ever! We love the biscotti and the chicken and leek pie - which has become a regular! The book has been requested for Christmas by my son and nieces. This book also brings back memories for me both of Sydney, where I also lived, and of the early 70's when my older children were young. Miranda's Mum's Danish apple Charlotte recipe is one I used to make regularly...and is now back on the repertoire! I always grated dark chocolate on top of mine ... but then chocolate has always been a big part of my life!
Reminded of the lovely books of Tove Jansson about the Moomins, which my daughter also loved, I bought one for my youngest granddaughter, who loved it too.
This is an imaginative cook book for young and old, beginner or old hand...something for everyone. Thank you for a great read and some gorgeous food ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming New Cookbook from a Devon Kitchen 24 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an unusual book, which came about when the author started to make a book of recipes to give to her Father after her Mother passed away - and Dad still needed feeding, but wasn't sure exactly how to go about it. It's a touching story. The book is done in a sort of diary style, parts of life described in text, then recipes from that time to follow. Miranda is obviously a great cook.

I like it. It is full of pictures of both food and scenery, with straight forward recipes, which are often just a bit different. Such as Finnish Salad with Orange Blossom Dressing, Pumpkin soup with Black Olive & Feta Quesadillas and an absolutely divine Blackberry and Sour Cream Clafoutis, which I would have bought the book for alone. Her porridge recipe is also great. There is a flapjack recipe - of course - `Chewy Flapjack', and it's good too, very sweet, oaty and just a bit chewy.

This is a family cookbook, it's also uplifting and calming at the same time, with recipes to suit everyday life in a family home.
