Product Description

Synopsis

Skills for creating a successful classroom are included in this transcription of a keynote address and workshop given to a national conference of Montessori educators. The tenets of 'Nonviolent Communication' are applied to a variety of settings, including the classroom and the home, in these booklets on how to resolve conflict peacefully. Illustrative exercises, sample stories, and role-playing activities offer the opportunity for self-evaluation, discovery, and application.

I am a teacher, and when I read Rosenberg's first book 'Nonviolent Communication - A language of Life' I was really inspired and impressed. The book went into lots of detail, with examples, and I was very keen to find out more about how I could apply these principals in school. So, I purchased this book. When it arrived, I realised it was a transcript of a workshop, and only about 40 pages long. Non the less, I began to read it, hoping it would support my work in school further. However, I soon realised, that other than using the terms 'giraffe' language (NVC) and 'jackal' language (violent language), and one transcript of a role play between a teacher and child, all the other examples were taken from the first book I had read. To put it in as NVC way as I can - I felt quite disappointed and dismayed. Although I hold Rosenburg's view in very high esteem, this book did not meet my needs to learn more about its application in a school setting, or inspire me further. I would have preferred a lot more real life child/teacher transcripts based on situations which arise in schools. For the extra money, I would personally recommend any teacher wishing to find out about NVC to buy his first book instead of this one.

HASH(0x98f91b7c) out of 5 stars Rehash of material from original book 25 July 2014
By Imperio Shanks - Published on Amazon.com

This book does not really offer new material. It takes material from a lecture Dr. Rosenberg did for an audience of teachers, however the material presented is really not different from the one found in the Non-Violence Communication book. The lecture is cured by someone to offer the highlight aspects of it, however there is really nothing new.
This is the third book I buy on this, and to be honest, I believe the first one "Non-Violence Communication" is the only one that needs to be bought. The others I've bought are a rehash of the same material with perhaps one or two short new examples.
The concept is great, I believe it provides a very effective way to resolve conflict and to enrich relationships. And this book does not offer anything that was not already in the original book.

I'll be incorporating these techniques in my classroom this year. What a great way to help children cope with school. Teaching kids these communication skills will serve them well throughout their lives.
