Product Description

Knockabout romantic comedy starring Clark Gable and Doris Day. Gable plays Jim Gannon, a tough, self-educated newspaper editor who writes an article disparaging the idea that newspaper journalism can be taught, in response to the news that a class is being set up to teach the subject to aspiring journalists. Gannon's publisher senses a story in the making, and so sends Gannon to attend the class, under an assumed name, which is being run by feisty Erica Stone (Day), the daughter of a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter. Before long Gannon's writing skills have brought him to the top of the class, and an underlying attraction has developed between teacher and student. However, Erica's arrogant fiancé, Dr Hugo Pine (Gig Young) and Gannon's nightclub singer girlfriend Peggy DeFore (Mamie Van Doren) are the obstacles standing in the way of true love.

Product Description

By Foggy Tewsday VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Agreeable romantic comedy with Clark Gable as gruff City Editor, Jim Gannon. He's an uneducated man and proud of it. But he finds himself falling for journalism professor Erica Stone (Doris Day). Gig Young is very funny in his role as the relentlessly successful Dr Hugo Pine, psychologist and bongo player extraordinaire of whom Gannon is so jealous.

Some of the dialogue is a little stilted, and at times the film has the feel of a stage play about it, but it's always entertaining. The scene at the Bongo Club with an embarrassed Jim Gannon getting hot and bothered as his girlfriend performs her raunchy (for the time) night club act, is a real hoot. Gable plays the scene to perfection and his character's discomfort is all too apparent to the much amused Erica.

This is a much underrated (by the professional critics) comedy and it's a pity that the DVD offers nothing in the way of extras except subtitles and audio in various languages. The film clocks in at nearly two hours, but it's such a pleasant diversion that it doesn't feel that long.

5.0 out of 5 stars well written 28 Nov 2011

Clark Gable here looks very common and ordinary trying hard to impress Doris Day.Its a movie about whether experience is more important or professional training or studies too matter.Gable plays editor of a Newspaper who thinks journalism is taught by experience and rubbishes training course for Journalism. He writes a offensive letter to Doris Day who teaches Journalism and is sent by his Boss later to say sorry to her,he ends up enrolling in her class and falling madly in love with her. Doris Day herself is the Daughter of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, she is lovely and composed here.Gig Young who plays her over accomplished boy friend is quite charming. His scenes with Clark Gable are a joy to watch. The movie is very well written and drives home its point wonderfully about the necessity of professional education.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teachers Pet is a great watch 24 Feb 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this film because Doris Day and Clark Gable are two of my all time favourite actors. They both "do" comedy very well and they certainly didn't disappoint during this film. Gable plays Jim Gannon a newspaper editor and Day plays Professor Stone a lecturer in journalism at the local university. Professor Stone sends an invite to Gannon asking him to be a guest speaker in one of her classes but Gannon who is negatively opinionated about schools for journalism writes a scathing reply and declines the invite. He is ordered by his boss to apologise to Professor Stone in person but when he sees that she is an attractive, curvaceous, blonde he has other ideas and masquerades as one of her students. I recommend you watch this film and see how his fun unfolds.
