I picked this book up, because of a recommendation through Amazon, after I had purchased Gervase Phinn's books! There was a sticker on the front of the book when it arrived, even saying if you like Gervase Phinn (GP) you will love this. Rightly I think this was a bit unfair, the book should be judged on it's own merits and I thoroughly enjoyed it though I did have my doubts to begin with. There was some great similarites to GP and even some identical stories - the lad with his trousers round his ankles wanting to know who wipes the bottoms(cleaned up for this review!) around here! This aside, the doubts faded and I found the book delightful and I have always had a bit of a thing for 'school' type stories. The characters were all individuals and not there merely to show the strengths of the author throughout his first year as a head teacher of Ragley School. Unlike GP you could date this book, the year is 1977/78 as dated at the beginning of every chapter and all the outside influences going on in the world are reflected through events and characters. I wonder if in 30 years time we will have similar books, describing what the education system is like currently. I look forward to the next book and just hope there is not too much similarity to GP.
