Less nebulous than the other books about Apple's confusing, time-robbing Cloud 27 April 2012
By Samuel Chell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The author is not so insensitive as to make explicit reference to the potential problems of the "iCloud." But unlike other books about Apple's curious (and confounding) Cloud, he goes further than simply "explaining" the invention or praising its alleged benefits. He gets to the point, showing you how to find step 1 and proceed from there to step 2. (I did not get this help from a currently more popular book in Amazon's ratings.) In fact, the author of "ICloud in 10 Minutes" provided information that "enabled" me (as suggested by the book's parenthetical subtitle) to solve a couple of especially sticky problems.

Admittedly, no Apple innovation has given me as much trouble as Apple's "unique" Cloud. It's led to ridiculously exponential multiplication of my music files, along with black marks by all of the nascent, or "imaginary," tunes in my iTunes library, making me search repeatedly for the "real" tune (and mostly when time is of the essence). It's glutted my computer's "start-up disc" (Apple's lingo for hard drive) and filled up my external hard drives. It's denied me the right to play my own recordings on an iPod because I have selected / purchased Apple's "Match Service." It's made management of three iPod Touches with three Apple I.D.s a seemingly unsolvable nightmare (Apple doesn't permit you to extinguish an I.D., though they're considerate enough to issue periodic cryptic warnings with dire implications. Apple even sends notes about how many days you have left before you can associate a device with a different account (I've missed every day thus far).

Most of these books are good at explaining the advantages, conveniences, creative and cool features that are already a familiar part of the Apple Cloud hype. But to realize these benefits, one must "learn" the intricacies of the Cloud, a lesson which "Sam" takes to heart, keeping extraneous business to a minimum and providing the information that will empower the reader to put up a respectable if not victorious fight. (As Oscar Wilde and Faulkner both observed, the things most worth teaching, can't be taught: they must be learned.) In other words, only you can only teach yourself how to master the iCloud--though it doesn't hurt to have a savvy guide like Sam close by--if only to provide a bit of handholding, encouragement, and tips along the way.

Just don't be too surprised if Amazon's rather than Apple's Cloud ultimately beckons as the more attractive (and practical) alternative among the various cumuli. Or, for that matter, wouldn't you rather revisit that neglected 30-year-old collection of vinyl treasures? (I can attest that Apple's iCloud has the potential to transform your neighborhood's most prominent Geek into a grumpy old Luddite.)
