Product Description

Synopsis

'Teach Yourself Yiddish' will be the first choice for students of the Yiddish language: students following university and evening class courses; mother-tongue speakers wanting to reinforce their own knowledge and pass it on to non-Yiddish-speaking relatives; members of religious communities, who need Yiddish in order to be able to access historic sermons and homilies; people interested in Yiddish folklore and music, and Ashkenazi Jews wanting to re-discover their cultural roots. 'Teach Yourself Yiddish' is the only self-access course on the market to teach the Yiddish language as well as aspects of Yiddish culture. The course comprises a text book and two audio CDs. The language is taught through dialogues, songs and other texts, some of which appear on the audio recording. Lively sketches and cartoons liven up the learning process, which is reinforced by written, listening and speaking exercises. The Yiddish language is presented in both Hebrew script and phonetic transliteration and, unusually, works outwards from the English alphabet, developing it phonetically towards its Yiddish counterparts.

The purpose of this presentation is to facilitate the student's recognition of sounds and words. In the later stages of the course, the transliteration is dropped in favour of Hebrew script. Both printed and hand-written forms of the Hebrew script are taught. The book is available in a pack with the double CD (0 340 92779 8); the double CD is also available separately (0 340 92780 1).
