Saved my sanity - a fantastic book!,
By New Parent "Bristle" (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Teach Yourself Happy Toddler Mealtimes 2010 (Teach Yourself General) (Paperback)
I borrowed this book from my local library in early 2011 and having renewed it four times I figured I should buy it! Having a fussy young toddler, I was finding mealtimes stressful and felt concerned about what my little one was missing out on by eating poorly. This book is like the most knowledgeable health visitor or paediatric nutritionist you've never met. Judy More clearly and non-judgementally explains every aspect of nutrition, backing her opinions up with reasoning and common sense. She explains the background and offers tips for lots of different types of eater. It is written in such a way that you can dip in and out of it as needed and good use is made of sub-headings and tables, as well as a helpful reference section at the end. There are some nice recipes and tips on meal planning. I cannot recommend this book enough; it totally saved my sanity and has helped myself and my toddler relax about mealtimes. We are all much happier as a result. If you have a tricksy eater (or even if you don't) I'd most definitely recommend this book!

I chose this book to reassure myself I was giving the right advice to my sister in law about her 2 and a half year old's fussy eating as my son the same age eats loads. However now I have read the book I have realised that some of the things we do, like using a treat/pudding as a bribe for them to eat their main meal, actually does the opposite and makes them see the treat as something more desirable. It works for my son but it is useful to know what to do for fussy eaters as Judy More explains in a clear and down to earth way what we can do to create a better eater without forcing them and worrying too much. There are loads of healthy food ideas and recipes that I will use for my own family and it tells you everything they need to be eating to get the nutrition they need. It is worth having for any parent with a fussy eater or not, it also gives information for parents of children with autism, vegan and diabetic children. One thing I now know is that I should take my son off his bottles of milk which I will do now I know how much he needs and what else he needs. This book is much more than just common sense like a lot of other books from their reviews seem to be, and it doesn't make you feel guilty for not doing things perfectly! It will be passed on to my sister in law as I hope it will help her to see what they're doing and what they could do differently too.
