"Practical advice perfectly packaged" (Media Week )

Product Description

Lots of books tell you how to deal with the practicalities. This one tells you how to deal with yourself.

You should read this book if:
· You are thinking of running your own business
· You are already running your own business but are finding it a bit of a struggle
· You are having trouble motivating yourself
· You are frustrated with books that don't deal with the emotional issues
· You work for a company but wish to harness the qualities of someone who works on their own

Working on your own can be the best feeling in the world. The glory is all yours when things go well... and the problems are all yours when they don't. When you do actually start running your own business, the first thing that you have to confront is that the whole thing is down to you. This is not a one-off sensation at the beginning. In fact, it never quite goes away, even after you have had a successful start and have established a bank of regular customers.

You owe it to yourself to make business enjoyable even if the central reason for it is to make money. The central principle of this book is that working on your own doesn’t mean that you are destined to feel lonely or isolated. It can actually be the best feeling in the world. Free of the constraints of company life, or brimming with enthusiasm at the prospect of at last being able to realise the benefits of your own idea, you are all set to experience the thrill of being your own boss.

Teach Yourself Running Your Own Business attends to what are sometimes referred to as the softer issues: how to conduct yourself, how to understand why other people behave as they do, ensuring that their actions don’t upset you unduly, establishing how to do the things you don’t like without becoming unbearably grumpy, and so on. In short, how to be successful and stay sane.

This book helps to prepare you for the unknown and make running your own business more of a pleasure. It’s a bit like having a business partner who has already been through what you are likely to face next. It also frequently lends a humorous angle to take the edge off some of the trickier issues you are likely to encounter.

Do it your way and make it work for you. Because that’s what working on your own is all about.

I read this book after meeting Kevin Duncan, and much like meeting him, it's been a breath of fresh air. Having run my own business for 11 years, I really thought there was very little I had left to learn from a book that seems aimed at those about to start. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Whilst much of what Kevin suggests seems to be common sense, I'd bet that very few of us are actually doing all of it. Working through all the thought-provoking questions and exercises provided an excellent review of what has worked well, what I can and should change, and reminded me of the importance of time off. There are tons of practical tips and suggestions on financial facts of life, planning ahead, building contacts, what to charge, managing meetings and looking after clients. And a healthy dose of humanity. Anyone with dreams of setting up their own business, consultancy or simply going freelance, needs to get their hands on this book. Anyone currently running their own small business will benefit from using it to pause for thought.

All About You 5 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is not about book-keeping systems, tax implications or websites, this is how you cope as a person with running your own business. All the bits the other books don't cover - so it makes it a very good partner.
It is written in small bit size chunks which makes it very readable.
If you want to start up your own business or indeed running it I would recommend you get it.

As someone who's always been attracted by the lure of running my own business, I thought I'd give this book a shot. And I'm glad I did.

It's laid out in a very easy-to-digest format and it doesn't waste words. So not only is it easy and enjoyable to read (a refreshing change from most business books) but I can also see it doubling as a reference book in the future.

It's full of pertinent questions and answers and offers up several useful reality checks to help focus the mind. I found it a really useful companion and would recommend it to anyone who wants to run/or is already running their own business.

Has it convinced me to go it alone? Well, put it this way, you'd better keep an eye on the FT!
