3.0 out of 5 stars Not What It Promises on the Cover 17 July 2012
By C. M. Cotton TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I have read a plethora of Career, CV, Interview type books. Some have been very good and some have been not that great. This book which sets out with a rather lofty promise, to teach the reader all an expert career advisor knows in a week is only very average.

My first issue I have with this book, is that the lofty promise of being able to teach everything in a week, cannot really be done. What this book will give you is a simple and straightforward guide to career planning and it does it in quite a simplistic way.

The book sets out to try and be a self diagnosing career advisor. As other reviewers have said, the questions it asks, can be vague. This is the second problem, the vagueness of the book makes it quite difficult for you to write down concise responses, which is what is required if you want to move your career forward. The idea behind this process is that the answers you give, lead you to identifying the career path you should be taking. There is very little in depth help offered.

I find this book does not fulfill its initial promise of giving you as much knowledge as a career advisor, in a week. What it does give you is a starting point to help you decide which career path is right for you. I think there are better books on the market for this type of subject, such as the brilliant Dummies Guide to Job Searching or James Caan's book Get the Job You Really Want.

This is not a bad book, but it is too vague which is a problem if you have no idea about which career you should be considering. The book can only really be used as a starting point to identify which career path is suitable for you. If this is all you want then buy it. If you are looking for greater analysis or insider secrets of how to find a job, use the other recommended books.

Not recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars In a week? 9 April 2013
By Donald Lush VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The strap line on the cover is a bit over the top, implying both quicker and easier results than are likely to be achieved. This is a weakness that all such books are prone to. The decision to change and develop your working life requires courage, hard work and persistence. It's also something that needs to be revisited frequently. It will bring rewards, but they aren't instant. Having said that, I like this book for its demystifying effects. It's too easy to put career success down to luck or contacts - mostly it's the product of honest reflection, clear thinking and determined following of a plan based on the first two. And this book contains lots of useful exercises to help you get going in a practical and accessible way. Like all such books (and there are many), it's best to approach it with intelligent scepticism; take the parts you find valuable and stimulating and don't worry too much about the bits that don't ring bells for you. But if you work your way through it you should end up feeling clearer and more positive about your future. Then - it's over to you!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good advice for the jobseeking 21 Sep 2012
By Lark TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I would recommend this book to jobseekers, particularly those entering the labour market for the first time because while it does provide some great information besides the intuitive, and I enjoyed reading it, it am unsure it provides a lot of insights that experience, reflection and general planning would provide.

It is a very accessible and graphic guide, like all the "in a week" series or "teach yourself" range of books. There are tabs in the right hand margin which allow for quick browsing to the "day"/chapter you want to read.

The book is highly structured, there is a contents page at the beginning, chapters are concluded with end of chapter summaries of content and use sub-headings, cartoons, bullet points, flow charts to convey quickly its content. The end of chapter summaries utilise questions to check understanding and to capture the readers reflection.

While there is a contents there is no index but two pages of guide to resources including books, websites and other sources.

The style of writing is some what prosaic and matter of fact but at once instructive, providing definite food for thought while possibly considered more banal by seasoned career planners or planning minded individuals. Hence why I would recommend this book primarily to younger readers or those job seeking for the first time. That said it does provide some interesting content, some of it blunt, these include content upon "surviving in tough times" which is provided by way of concluding points.

There are some points about "reviewing your career" which would suggest the author does not intend it to be exclusively for the first job seeker, for instance considering career changes or job seeking because of an "abysimal state of employment per se" or describing some job seekers as building a "portfolio" with their work and career plans, pass times, interests and other CV content.
