Review

"This is undoubtedly an excellent course to consider if you really want to communicate properly in a language beyond simple holiday words and phrases...it will get you results...and all at a very reasonable price."

Product Description

'Teach Yourself Japanese' is a lively and accessible introduction to everyday spoken and written Japanese. This book/CD pack offers the opportunity to learn to read, listen to and speak Japanese script whilst also featuring the more familiar romajji (roman) script, in which all grammar explanations of Japanese terms are written.

Topics covered in the course include Japanese name conventions, workplace, transport, media, aspects of modern society and environmental issues, and the language is taught via realistic and interesting dialogues.

The accompanying audio CDs allow listeners to hear authentic Japanese spoken by native Japanese speakers in everyday situations. They provide approximately 2 hours of listening material. The CDs (978 0 340 94171 3) and book (978 0 340 94173 7) can also be purchased separately.

There is an unfortunate amount of spelling mistakes, this is only outdone by the grammatical and translation mistakes e.g. translation of 'depato no ue' as 'nearby the department store' when it is of course 'in front of the department store'. Naturally this doesnt inspire confidence in the ability of the author or in fact their editors.
The combinations of seemingly random groups of phrases makes it difficult to build up a progressive understanding of the language or any practical us of it whilst in the country for instance. there is no real way to track down a certain theme of conversation and the key lessons are mingle in with cultural information and there is a dire lack of clarity and separation.
To top it off however the book is generally disappointing as it is 'hyped up' as being better than it is. My personal opinion seek a different author. Oxford University Press is rather good if they happen to still produce them...
content is good, but in terms of learning it is exceedingly difficult.
