Designed for those who want to speak basic Japanese immediately or who have tried other courses without success, this course uses a carefully structured method that targets only the most important vocabulary and grammar. The special learning programme takes only 45 minutes a day for six weeks and has fewer than 500 words for you to learn. The grammar has been pared down to the "bare bones" and is explained in a no-nonsense way in simple English so you should not get bogged down by unnecessarily complicated structures that you will not need. There is lots of practice for you as you work through the course, and by using the flashcards provided at the end of the book and memorizing the sentences in the "learn by heart" sections, you should find that you are speaking in whole sentences and with confidence right from the start. The rules of pronunciation are simplified and are available separately on the accompanying CD, so you will have a model to follow rather than trying to follow written instructions.
About the Author
Elisabeth Smith is German and has taught French, German and Spanish at different levels all over the world for the past 30 years. She was the Chief Executive of a South African publishing house before moving to Spain, where she now lives for most of the year.

Well organised and very good. It dispenses with all the intricacies that you have to learn if you want to speak properly. Instead, it teaches the basics you need to be able to communicate travel-related issues. It doesn't matter if you make mistakes, the emphasis is on starting to communicate, which I think is a good approach. Buy a few months before you travel to Japan and your trip will be that much better!

Purchased CD first then realised that book was required. The description on Amazon was not clear, I could have purchsed book & CD together for rather less than each seperately. The course itself seems OK although I have not yet got into it fully.

Very easy to follow. You will need further courses afterwards but it does teach you the basics. You need to have the commitment to achieve the end goal
