Product Description

Product Description
Using a book/CD combination, this is a complete course in understanding, speaking and writing Hindi, the language spoken by over 275 million people throughout the world. If you are a beginner, or if your Hindi just needs brushing up, this course will progress quickly beyond the basics to a level where you can communicate with confidence. The course has proved effective as teaching material for both class tuition and individual study.

The Hindi presented in the course is primarily colloquial and practical. An advantage of this approach is that it gives greater access to Urdu, Hindi's sister language. Hindi and Urdu share a virtually identical grammar and much of their vocabulary.

The course is divided into 18 units, each of which is based on dialogues which exemplify and bring to life the new grammar introduced in that particular unit. Transliteration in the roman script is provided for the first five units and for all words in the Hindi-English glossary. The dialogues form a kind of soap opera based on the life of a Delhi family; the English translations are deliberately close and literal, so as to form a key to the Hindi. The grammatical explanations are intended to be as accessible and non-technical as possible. The main grammatical structures of Hindi are all presented. There are plenty of exercises for you to practise every new point and a key at the back so that you can check your answers.

The book (0 340 86687 X) is accompanied by 2 cassettes (0 340 86688 8) or 2 CDs (0 340 91383 5) containing approximately 2 hours of listening material. The audio can be purchased on its own or as packs with the book (book/cassette pack: 0 340 86686 1; book/CD pack: 0 340 91382 7).

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Hindi Language Course I've come across, 17 Aug 2006
By H Raz (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Teach Yourself Hindi is a well-structured language course, introducing you to new grammatical structures at a steady and progressive rate and presenting them - along with a manageable amount of useful vocabulary - in the context of instructive dialogues and accompanying examples and exercises which give you a rapid grasp and leave you feeling confident to put sentences together yourself right away. Anyone who is serious about learning a level of Hindi which will really enable them to communicate beyond basic phrases or tourist level language will find exactly what they need here.
This book will be good for complete beginners and also those whose parents are native speakers and thus can understand Hindi and maybe speak some, but who would like a stronger awareness of the grammar underpinning their speech.
My only slight frustration with the book is that - as I'm far more interested in spoken Hindi than written - I wish that the Hindi were written in the Roman alphabet all the way through (along with the Hindi script) and not just from units 1 to 5. Having to read the Hindi in the Hindi script without the transliteration to help has slowed me down considerably, but perhaps this isn't such a bad thing in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comment from a student of the author, 24 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This book is used at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London as an aid for teaching in the first year of a Hindi degree. The wording of the book is very clear and explains all of Hindi grammer. After a year's hard work I was able to speak, listen, read and write Hindi with relative fluency and so will you too if you buy this book and cassette and put in a bit of time and effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars By far the best for learning Hindi, 18 Dec 2007
By Ms. J. Fry "Twizo" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I thought this pack was really well put together and easy to learn from. The only possible problem that I noticed was that it was quite hard to just just the CD or the book - I really needed to use both together as they compliment each other.
I found I picked up the language really quickly and learnt really useful phrases/words which were put to good use in India!
