This book is used at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London as an aid for teaching in the first year of a Hindi degree. The wording of the book is very clear and explains all of Hindi grammer. After a year's hard work I was able to speak, listen, read and write Hindi with relative fluency and so will you too if you buy this book and cassette and put in a bit of time and effort.

Teach Yourself Hindi is a well-structured language course, introducing you to new grammatical structures at a steady and progressive rate and presenting them - along with a manageable amount of useful vocabulary - in the context of instructive dialogues and accompanying examples and exercises which give you a rapid grasp and leave you feeling confident to put sentences together yourself right away. Anyone who is serious about learning a level of Hindi which will really enable them to communicate beyond basic phrases or tourist level language will find exactly what they need here.

This book will be good for complete beginners and also those whose parents are native speakers and thus can understand Hindi and maybe speak some, but who would like a stronger awareness of the grammar underpinning their speech.

My only slight frustration with the book is that - as I'm far more interested in spoken Hindi than written - I wish that the Hindi were written in the Roman alphabet all the way through (along with the Hindi script) and not just from units 1 to 5. Having to read the Hindi in the Hindi script without the transliteration to help has slowed me down considerably, but perhaps this isn't such a bad thing in the end.

I am a sixteen year old school boy, and decided that (for some reason!) I wanted to learn to speak, read and write Hindi. I bought this book hoping for an introductory guide to get me going, and wasn't disappointed. I then thought, I want to progress further than just the basics, and again, wasn't disappointed.

Having read some other reviews of this book, I feel I must say that the script is the bet bit. After only a few days, I was able to read (though obviously not always understand) all that the book threw at me. The beginning section on the script is very clearly set out, and makes it very easy to learn.

This book is set out so logically, and so clearly, that it makes learning an enjoyable experience, while still greatly challenging you to improve.
It is crammed with useful phrases that you could use in India, and I am looking forward to using my new knowledge in a trip to India later this year.

I strongly reccommend that you buy this book, it is really comprehensive and interesting, yet still challenging.
