Product Description

Product Description

English is (and always has been) in a state of change. If we consider the root as Old English, the influence of Latin, Norse, Norman French and courtly French is obvious, but what about the influence of German Kings or East European immigrants, of settlers in, and migrants from, former colonies and possessions in all five continents?

The change occurs constantly, slowly and often unobserved - and it is important to remember that it has not brought the language to a state of perfection, then stopped, but is still happening all around us. So what is correct English? It is that used by the majority of people we trust to use 'correct' English. The approach taken in Teach Yourself English Grammar is that the English language is not fixed in a certain correct form, that change is slow, but constant, and that part of the richness of the English language is the variety of acceptable forms. However, you ignore the concept of standard English at your peril.

Teach Yourself English Grammar balances the demand for a 'how to' book with academic interest and indicates accepted English usage and grammatical forms. It is a clear, accessible guide to modern English grammar that will help you to improve your knowledge of the language. It contains:

- easy-to-follow explanations and summaries

- practical tips on how to avoid common grammar mistakes

- a special section on punctuation

- exercises so that you can practise what you have learnt

- interesting facts about the historical and regional use of English

- a 'taking it further' section to direct you to further sources of information about the English language

The leader in self-learning with more than 300 titles, covering all subjects. Be where you want to be with Teach Yourself.

I puchased this book to support a level 4 literacy qualification. It explains the principles of English in a very clear way. It has also been an excellent support to my daughter who is studying A level English Language. Brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, informative and thorough, 22 Mar 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Teach Yourself English Grammar (TY English Reference) (Paperback)
Most grammar books either lose themselves in prescriptive (or worse, proscriptive) admonitions, which quickly become outdated or 'quaint', or are so badly laid out and presented that they are consulted only by the truly desperate. Ron Simpson's book, on the other hand, manages to be entertaining, informative and well-structured. Consultations shouldn't present too many difficulties, as a result.

2.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't understand a word, 6 July 2010

This review is from: Teach Yourself English Grammar (TY English Reference) (Paperback)
I bought this book so I could help my Brazilian friend with her grammar. The book was absolutely awful. I really do not know who it was written for. Maybe it is for qualified teachers but I couldn't understand a word of it. There was no structure to it. I have written two books so I have some level of skill when it comes to writing but seriously I could not work this book out. I can speak Portuguese and Spanish to an ok standard too, so I have a little understanding of language structure. I do not know how a foreign person could understand this. I have given this a 2 star and not a 1 star as I wonder if it is me missing something. But I would not recommend it to foreign people.
