5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to couselling and therapy, 30 Jan 2003
I got this book as I'm about to begin training on the long road to being a therapist, but I expected it to be a little basic. Instead I was very much surprised and challenged by this book, which made me really look at my own motivations, beliefs and skills in relation to choosing such a demanding career. I found it very accessible without being patronising, and absolutely full of useful information and examples. The text is simple and clear, the information is broad ranging, and the overall message is encouraging, unlike so many other books on counselling and therapy. The message is that choosing therapy as a career is never an easy option but that the personal rewards are great, and the book manages to demystify a lot of the theory through straightforward examples and suggestions of approaches to use in various situations. Ms Milne treats all issues with great sensitivity and I was particularly impressed with the chapter on more serious issues clients may present such as grief, suicidal thoughts, self-harm and childhood abuse. Even my therapist (a well respected therapist and trainer) wanted a copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb - saved the day!, 7 Dec 2005
This book is absolutely essential for anyone doing counselling courses, whether Initial Skills courses or Advanced Diplomas. The book covers so many areas and breaks it all down into manageable chunks which are all easy-to-read and therefore absorb.
I could not have completed my Counselling Studies course without this guide, it was easy to look anything up and it also gave me food for thought in many areas, which I could then use for course criteria. Buy it!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars too basic, 28 Feb 2006
i bought this book in the first year of my counselling degree with the intention of actually using it to good use. unfortunately, it hasn't been used as much. Why you ask? well...i cant remember. i used it a couple of times to quickly jot something down, so its handy if you need to revise coz its simple to understand and its well bullet pointed. so i would say that this book is like a dictionary; you only need to look at it if you dont understand a term.
