4.0 out of 5 stars Good value but lacks pronunciation advice 16 Jan. 2015

Diligent study of this little book should give one the ice breaking basic phrases when meeting Afrikaner South Africans. More pronunciation advice would be helpful as when I practiced my new language skills on a Afrikaans speaking friend she couldn't understand what I was talking about. "I thought you spoke fluent Afrikaans" I challenged, "I do, you don't!" was her reply.

I bought the thing because three or four of my Facebook friends are from South Africa. The information in this book is well-laid-out.
The exercises in it reinforce the points. I really like the book, but there are no vocabulary lists, no lists of the words the author thought more important than the others. Thus, in the first chapter alone there are something like eighty two new words and phrases that one can either memorize or leave unlearned.

4.0 out of 5 stars English speaker who knows some Afrikaans 22 Mar. 2014
By Pen Name - Published on
I downloaded the sample.
The book looks fine to me for beginners.
It is the way I started learning Afrikaans years ago, so should give some good basics
Sentence structure is the big thing for an English speaker.
The words of Afrikaans are very easy to learn,
remembering how to construct the sentence in the right order takes a lot of practice.
Especially past or future tense.
The sample showed present tense.
