I am a speech-language pathologist and am asked all the time, "Wont signing get in the way of my little one learning to talk?" NO--EMPHATICALLY NO! In fact, adding in sign PROMOTES spoken language! There are too many articles to cite here to back me up, but suffice it to say that when your baby points to milk and says, "mamama," she is already using gestures/signs--they come first before spoken language! All that said, I got this book for my brother and his wife--two CPA's with their first--because it is incredibly user friendly and gives real-world pointers for how to make the signs and in what contexts. It draws directly from American Sign Language, so in all seriousness, if your little one grows up to befriend someone who uses ASL, they will (on a very basic level) be able to "talk" with them! Honestly, a great resource for parents who are looking to make their first year or two with their baby smooth. Wouldn't it be great if you knew what your 7-month old was screaming about?? If he knows the sign for it, I promise you, he will tell you what he wants :) Enjoy!!
