I loved all the ideas and recipes in this book. It is the sort of book that upon reading makes your tummy rumble and you just have to go through to the kitchen and try out some of the recipes. The only thing missing from the book was full colour illustrations. I think with a bit of photography, the book would have been perfect. What illustrations there are do not really give an accurate representation of the food on offer. Other than that, a very good book to add to the recipe book collection.

Tea 19 Jan 2011

This is a lovely little book. I am a complete cookbook junky.
The recipes are yummy with some lovely ones like Almond Macaroons,Cherry cake, Lavender scones and Baked Bean pies.
It has sections covering Sandwiches, Savouries, Cakes and buns, Bread, Teas and Ices and Pastries. Each chapter is set out with some useful information and tips with alternative ideas.
The only downside is the lack of Photographs with just line drawings which is a bit of a let down hence 4 stars not 5.
Otherwise it is well set out and a lovely book to own, it is a comfortable size to hold and use and lies flat while open on a recipe. It reminds me of a school text book a great addition to my collection

Make Tea, Not War 22 Dec 2010

Unite the world with drop scones, shortbread and a nice cup of char. This is a gorgeous looking, old school cookbook, that would charm the socks of even the most recalcitrant of dictators. The cakes taste good too! Whilst it is occasionally patronising, this book is essential for anybody planning a 'proper' afternoon tea, or for that matter any sort of occasion where a kettle and cake are required. There isn't a great deal of innovation in here, if you a regular baker of cakes, you will probably have most of these recipes already. If however, you are starting out on your baking odyssey, there are a host of easy-to-follow recipes for you to choose from.

This is a good value for money and practical cookbook. With its pleasing presentation, it would make an ideal present, particularly if the person you gave it to was in a position to regularly bake for you! People of Britain: Listen to Mrs Simkins clarion call. Take up your spoons, bowls and whisks, and let's unite the world under a sugary banner. Love and pieces of cake to all men...(and women). Highly recommended.
