Biography

Kiri Te Kanawa gained legendary status almost overnight after her sensational debut as the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 1971. From then, she moved rapidly into the front rank of international opera, and has become one of the most famous sopranos in the world.

At the time of her operatic debut she was already an experienced concert and recording artist,… Read more in Amazon's Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This compilation album covers the astonishingly varied output of Kiri Te Kanawa's recording career between 1984 and 1997, during which time she was singing Italian and French operatic repertoire, folk songs, popular classics and masterpieces of German romanticism. The pleasure of this pot-pourri lies in listening to the different timbres of voice that she brings to each genre: she is rich and fruity in the moments of Italian anguish ("L'altra notte in fondo al mare" from Mefistofele is particularly well done), cooler and more silvery in the French repertoire ("Depuis le jour" from Louise, for example) and brings just the right amount of relaxation to the Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin. The highlight for me is the piece of German music, ("Marietta's Lied" from Korngold's Die Tote Stadt) which, as anyone who has heard her sing Strauss knows, is really her home territory. The sense of discipline tempered by spirituous lushness that she brings to this ravishing music is a marvel. A great place for Kiri novices to start, and ideal for fans to plug gaps in their collection. --Warwick Thompson

To be honest, in my humble opinion a great deal of female voices in classical music are pretty unnerving. A big exception to the rule is Te Kanawa's voice; it is warm and beautiful even singing Strauß'operas which are - unless you love his music - tough stuff even for the connoisseur. This compilation comprising classical and popular tunes is excellent listening for a quiet evening. Thumbs up for Te Kanawa!

This CD is absolutely wonderful! The range of songs on the CD show just how versitile Kiri Te Kanawa really is. Anyone who appreciates a beautiful voice will be rewarded by this CD time and time again. It is a must buy!

I love this CD for its versatile range of songs. I have always been a fan of Dame Kiri but have never bought any of her CD's until now - what a loss of time and enjoyment!!!
Dame Kiri's voice is rich, golden and pure. Each and every song is a treasure to listen to even if you haven't heard some of them before, like me for instance.
I will be playing this CD often. Don't make the mistake I did, buy it now, don't wait twenty years.

Beautiful as she is 6 April 2012

My apology. I'm re-writing this review. Bought so many cd all at once and mistook hers as other cd. Her voice is absolutely gorgeous.
I'm not a musician and don't know much about the technicality of the music. When I listen and like it then
it is good. This cd is definitely one of the best to me. Only downside is that too much emphasize to vocal on recording. When her voice goes full throttle, it gets unbalanced. Other than that nice ensemble.
