Product Description

Written just before his death in 1893, Tchaikovsky's Pathétique symphony is in many respects the first twentieth-century symphony. Listening to the emotional catharsis of the first movement, or the manic energy unleashed in the "Scherzo", it's not difficult to hear the (second world) wartime symphonies of Shostakovich and Prokofiev waiting in the wings. It's also a masterpiece in its own right, and Mikhail Pletnev's 1991 recording gives it a fresh leash of life. The highlight is an astonishingly rapid account of the "Scherzo", superbly played by the orchestra Pletnev himself founded. There's no lack of feeling elsewhere, though don't expect heart-on-sleeve emotion of the kind Tchaikovsky has suffered from so much. In its new coupling, you get a selection of Tchaikovsky's piano music: the Op. 21 pieces are probably more interesting to play than hear, but The Seasons is delightfully intimate music, while Pletnev is as imaginative an arranger as he is an insightful pianist in The Sleeping Beauty transcriptions. A successful compilation, well worth acquiring. --Richard Whitehouse

Occasionally I feel listening to Pletnev as a conductor on record and several times in person in concert that the polish and professionalism tend to find me admiring his performances rather than being emotionally uplifted by them, my attention being invariably drawn to illuminating points of orchestral detail he draws attention to in scores that I know well. As far as this Virgin Tchaikovsky sixth is concerned, Pletnev's illuminating penetration and care for musical values is ever present, but so too is the imagination and recreative passionate thrust essential in breathing life into this masterpiece and for me this is simply one of the best recordings Pletnev has made and one of the very finest accounts of the sixth I have encountered. Some people may not like this recording, as one of the commentators here, though for the life of me I can't begin to understand why not. I believe the general critical consensus praising the special qualities of this recording are spot on...and not least incidentally for the marvellous sound quality that is self-evident. The Marche Slav comes off very well and the second disc with Pletnev as pianist adds to the attractiveness of the purchase. With nearly twenty recordings of the sixth that I value on my shelves, I count this as one of the leading modern performances, and I just do not understand it as being a recording to be almost warned against! Sometimes it is difficult to recommend an absolute first choice for a particular work and as I write this I have just ordered through Amazon another sixth ...that of Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra....having sampled online a few days ago I found yet another valuable perspective, richly recorded, .....Read more ›

Pletnev is both a great conductor and a great pianist. These are wonderful performances which comprise a major symphony, ballet music arranged for piano and a range of short piano pieces. You will appreciate the full range of Pletnev and also Tchaikovsky. If you doubt me - read the reviews in the various CD guides. An incredible bargain.

I love the music of Tchaikovsky and this theme is one of this that recall a lot of sensations and feelling inside of me...maybe all we...i suggest that enjoy with this call of happiness and sadness...in some way life is like this...sometimes up and other down but always living the melody.

It is surprising that all critics were so excited and lavishing in praise when this recording was released. Most of the time Penguin Guide gets it right, but that time I was tricked by the exciting review to buy this CD and I still remember how disappointed I was. The inner movements are just fine, but the first movement is the worst. The whole movement is played in a business-like, hurried manner, and the famous second theme is ruined by impatient rubato. The last movements is impressive enough, but it lacks depth and intensity this music requires. Maybe it was the cool, detached style and objective interpretation which appealed to the politically correct British critics. This is definitely not for me!

Power and pathos in equal quantities. Pletnev moves things along fast enough to be breathtaking, but never too fast. The expressive range is truly harrowing, and intensely moving.
