These are impassioned and heartfelt performances of three remarkable Symphonies. There is some beautiful individual playing here, as well as an overall recorded sound that is clear and detailed. I have to disagree with the comment about the Fifth Symphony- I found the recording just as good as the other two in this set, and the overall performance is very fine indeed. I don't think I've ever heard the horn solo in the slow movement played more beautifully; quietly, almost tentatively, from which gentle opening the movement builds to a powerful climax.
The "Pathetique" is an emotionally draining work in itself, a tragic glimpse into Tchaikovsky's tortured being at the very end of his life, and here it receives a performance that's up there with the very best.
Whether you're new to these wonderful works or know them well, I recommend these recordings very highly indeed.
