5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughful and yet passionate interpretations 13 Dec 2008
By Colin Fortune VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Pappano and the St Cecilia Orchestra are a potent mix, as can be heard in their remarkable Orchestral Music discTchaikovsky - Overtures and Fantasias that preceded this issue. But with the symphonies the conpetition is very fierce: the Mravinski sets (the earlier one in mono and with the 4th conducted by Sanderling) Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos 4-6 and Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos.4, 5 & 6 "Pathetique" with their mad speeds and total concentration are rightly deeply loved by many collectors for their Soviet swagger and white hot emotionalism. Ashkenazy's Double Decca set Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos. 4, 5 & 6 contains one of the the most accurate Symphony 4 performances and is in fine sound. Some people swear by Karajan's upholstered performances (see for example Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos. 4, 5 & 6 "Pathétique" or Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos.4, 5 & 6. So what has Pappano and his orchestra to offer?

The simple answer is beautifully proportioned and sane readings that stress the integrity of the symphonic form as developed and enriched by Tchaikovsky.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impeccable and emotional performances 5 July 2010
Format:Audio CD
Pappano and his Italian orchestra once again provide one of the best recent recordings for these three epic works. Every melody has room to sing, and the whole orchestra moves as one, but passion and drive are also abundant. The strings use searing vibrato and portamento where necessary, and the winds (relatively far back in the mix) are precisely delicate. The horn and brass playing is astonishing. This rendition of the Pathetique in particular is the most moving and impassioned I have ever come across, moving me every time. Highly recommended to anyone looking for their first recording of these works or for an alternative to some of the great masters. Sensational.

5.0 out of 5 stars First class performance and recording 26 July 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
These are impassioned and heartfelt performances of three remarkable Symphonies. There is some beautiful individual playing here, as well as an overall recorded sound that is clear and detailed. I have to disagree with the comment about the Fifth Symphony- I found the recording just as good as the other two in this set, and the overall performance is very fine indeed. I don't think I've ever heard the horn solo in the slow movement played more beautifully; quietly, almost tentatively, from which gentle opening the movement builds to a powerful climax.

The "Pathetique" is an emotionally draining work in itself, a tragic glimpse into Tchaikovsky's tortured being at the very end of his life, and here it receives a performance that's up there with the very best.

Whether you're new to these wonderful works or know them well, I recommend these recordings very highly indeed.

Really enjoyed these recordings especially the 4th. Have had many set of the tchaikovsky symphonies and would choose Karajan 77 plus these as my favourites

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent recording 26 Dec 2013

This is an excellent recording of the symphonies. Pappano maintains a wonderful balance within his orchestra and doesn't make the music sound too heavy or overblown. Superb
