I am grateful that Decca released this Dutoit version of Swan Lake as a slimline mid-priced twin-disc set.

It is a pleasing, well-balanced digital recording. Dutoit's rendition of the score is elegant and dramatic by turns, giving the individual dances time to express themselves while pumping up the adrenaline for the dramatic, narrative moments. I also welcome the French elegance in Dutoit's conducting. It helps the score to tip its hat to the French ballet score models (i.e. Delibes ballets) that inspired this particular Tchaikovsky ballet score.

I know that ballet scores need conductors who can handle the exigencies of conducting ballet in the theatre (i.e. moderate tempi that allow the dancers to keep up.) Hence many collectors might favour Bonynge, the EMI recording of Previn and the LSO, Lanchbery and Ermler. However, Dutoit's relatively brisk speeds still allow the moods to express themselves and fit into the larger whole of the score. The extrovert numbers have flair and brio, and I can imagine Dutoit and his Montreal players giving it their all in the divertissement of national dances and the other showy numbers. The lyrical sections are well sculpted and gracefully played, with nicely judged climaxes, notably in the swan scene and the love music for Siegfried and Odette. The supple speeds are well-controlled with no mindless stretching of phrases. The instrumentalists are all excellent when handling their various solos.

I am pleased that this version presents Tchaikovsky's original score without the omissions and reconfigurations of the 1895 Maryinsky performing edition.
