I first watched Nikolai Demidenko perform Tchaikovksy's 1st Piano Concerto under the SSO in Singapore and have since been in awe with this performer. Demidenko's renditions are like grandmother's cooking - slow, deliberate and tantalizingly palatable. Demidenko has a way of treating the delicate parts of the concert with utmost care - punctuating and stretching his notes like a wine connoisseur swirling and savoring every sip of an exquisite wine. Watching him play in person accentuates this effect further - his brooding, towering frame utterly engrossed over his instrument; his style unhurried, confident, fluent.
For someone that had never heard Scriabin before buying this CD, his Piano Concerto was the perfect dessert to the main course above - short, sweet, melodic, melancholic in an almost Chopinesque way.
A wonderful CD and a reminder that when it comes to being source for great performances by relatively unsung performers, nothing beats Amazon.com.
