Filmed at The Mariinsky Theatre St.Petersburg, where it was first performed in 1892, comes this adult version of the Nutcracker. Worlds away from the traditional and warm versions popular at Christmas, this unconventional production, reinterpreted by Russian emigre and world-renowned avant-garde artist Mikhail Shemiakin, is a surreal, and at times disturbing, piece. Two of the Mariinsky's young stars, Leonid Sarafanov and Irina Golub, dance the main roles, and Valery Gergiev conducts.

This is a well-recorded and performed production of the Nutcracker. However, a word of warning needs to be put for those expecting a 'traditional' production. This is a new staging and interpretation dating from 2001, with a completely different conceptual emphasis for many of the characters and their roles. The costuming and staging is bright and effective and works well in this production. The music is played in a refreshingly fleet manner and this accompanies effective steps in a modern way that I find a little ungainly at times but understandable in the circumstances - Clara is an unloved child at a transitional age in this production for example. Unsuspecting loved children expecting a kind artistic experience might find this rather unsettling although there are many unloved children in real life of course.

However there are fine alternatives. There is one for those who would prefer the 'traditional' Peter Wright version familiar to the Royal Ballet followers and which has been filling Covent Garden for years. For those who are familiar with this production there is nothing unexpected about this version and all is danced with the utmost skill within a lavish stage setting. The sound is excellent as is the camera work. This will be the perfect version for huge numbers of people and as such comes with the highest recommendation. It would be a Nutcracker of choice for many people.

There are others available which may also appeal. My personal favourite is the Bolshoi Ballet production with choreography by Grigorovich who has a wonderful sense of the epic and knows how to make the most of the large spaces provided by his theatre at the Bolshoi. Anyone who knows the Spartacus ballet for example will be aware of this.

Some say that the music of a country is best performed by artists in that country and this brilliant effort supports that view. The dancing, lavish and colourful sets, orchestral playing under maestro Gergiev, are all top notch. The choreography by Krill Simonov is new and different to that seen in most productions and this gives a freshness to the production. Quite a few dances are traditionally performed by solo artists but here are danced by two or three together. Many of the presentations have new, elaborate and effective staging with great effects. The music is very familiar to me and the overall result in 24 bit surround sound is both entertaining and musically satisfying. A 12 year old ballet student and her family looked at it with us and everyone voted it "great". Thoroughly recommended.

Some have complained this production is a bit too bawdy for what many regard as a children's ballet but I did not find it so and the leading ballerina is a treat to watch in every respect. This and the later Bolshoi release are both outstanding and the Covent Garden production runs them close.Buy all three!

The Nutcracker and Swan Lake are my prefered Tchaikovsky works.
BD technically perfect, except for one thing, a camera that shows the whole stage don't work properly, seams out of focus or defective, or standart resolution, I don't know. It's a shame. It's for that I give it only four stars.
I apologize for my English.
Pere
