As a former 'regular' at Covent Garden I have been brought up with a traditional 'Swan Lake', though admitting to being a fan of the Matthew Bourne version ! To date my 'clashes' with the Australian Ballet were with the Nureyev/Lucette Aldous 'Don Quixote' and their Ronald Hynd 'The Merry Widow'. When I was browsing through ballet dvds I came across this Graeme Murphy version and decided 'the price is right'. Am I pleased that I did buy it ! An original storyline .. gone is the evil wing-waving Von Rothbart, replaced by an equally spiteful Baroness Von Rothbart. Perhaps I might suggest watching the interview with Graeme Murphy before the ballet as it will clarify certain elements. It is beautifully danced. by an excellent company of dancers. The choreography is lyrical and highly inventive, with glorious pas de deux work from Madeleine Eastoe and Robert Curran in the lead roles. This is a version of 'Swan Lake' for today and I cannot recommend it too highly.
