Product Description

Review

'Just 21, Trifonov has won every top piano competition, and this shows why. His performance of the Tchaikovsky warhorse (with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra, sounding a bit diffuse) is nuanced but not mannered, virtuosic without being showy, and powerful yet not hammered, as many young Russian pianists do. Liszt s grandiose transcriptions of Schubert and Schumann songs, including a swirling Erlkönig, reveal his ability to conjure mood and drama with colour or phrasing, though he doesn t quite catch the humour of Die Forelle. He has the world at his feet. **** --The Times

At the age of 21, the Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov has already played with the world's leading orchestras, and last year alone won three major international titles, including the Tchaikovsky Competition Grand Prix, awarded by Valery Gergiev. Trifonov's combination of delicacy and fire leaves an indelible impression in this debut recording with the Mariinsky. The Tchaikovsky, scorching and heart-rending but never bombastic, is paired with solo Liszt transcriptions (of Schumann and Schubert) and Chopin's Barcarolle. We might be more sceptical had not the revered pianist Martha Argerich added her name to his supporters, describing him as 'technically incredible' and tender as well as demonic. She should know. --The Observer

This is a simply remarkable disc ... Daniil Trifonov s playing is a heady mix of super-virtuoso and the ability to generate the utmost tenderness ... He demonstrates an enviable variety of touch and shading ... The couplings are as intelligent as they are magnificent. --Colin Clarke, International Piano Nov/Dec 2012

5.0 out of 5 stars makes the Tchaikovsky sound completely new 27 Aug 2012
By schumann_bg TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This recording makes the Tchaikovsky Concerto no.1 sound completely fresh and absorbing, as if it's taking you on a new journey. It's hard to believe because the piece is so familiar, but somehow Daniil Trifonov has this effect, aided by the technicians on this very immediate recorded sound and wonderful phrasing from Gergiev. The opening statement of the theme, for instance, is surprising in its nuances that make it seem as if the tune has just been thought of, with no sense of monolithic pounding, yet it has all the vividness and strength it needs as well. My impression is of a razor-sharp technique, very much in the Russian tradition, and the product of years of the most intense practice, liberated by a total freshness of inspiration and youthful energy. The piano and orchestra merge in a superbly big sound, as if you were standing right in the middle of the orchestra, yet the solos have a cushioned effect as well, a kind of pliability ... this carries through the tender slow movement to the exhilaration of the dancing finale which has a wonderfully stable pulse. The Barcarolle provides a tender moment of calm after such elation, only to plunge into more playing of transcendent beauty in the remarkable Schubert arrangements. This has to be one of the most brilliant concerto debuts even where there are so many superb young pianists - Trifonov is a marvel!

This recording certainly confirms the talent of this young Russian pianist - a rising star indeed. A pleasure to listen to this version of Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto and highly recommended.
