5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional and complete 26 Aug 2012

I was originally put off buying this box set, remembering an early criticism of the sound quality being too 'tinny'. This was many years ago, prior to this re-release and repackaging from Warner Classics. At under 3 per disc, I thought it worth taking the risk, and how glad I did.

First, this truly is a complete box set. Other complete recordings (such as Michael Ponti's recording on VOX Records) are not complete, as they describe. Ponti's 5 disc set does not include the Theme and Variations in A minor, the Pot-pourri on themes from The Voyevoda or other short pieces such as the March for the Volunteer Fleet. All these are included here with the rarely heard Fifty Russian folksongs for piano duet (performed with Gennady Rozhdestvensky). Whilst the folksongs are very brief, relatively simple settings, there are nonetheless intriguing as they served as a treasure-trove for Tchaikovsky, returning to many of these themes in later works such as the 2nd Symphony, the 1812 Overture and the Serenade for Strings. The only omission in Postnikova's recording is the Anastasie Valse, written in 1854. As a juvenile piece, it can be understood why it was not included in this box set.

Second, Postnikova's interpretation is of the highest order. Again, if we compare this recording with Ponti, his performance is consistently heavy handed and rushed. Viktoria Postnikova, by contrast, gives a sensitive and thoughtful interpretation of Tchaikovsky's music, displaying as much attention to detail in simple works (such as the Album for the Young) as for the more virtuosic pieces (such as the C sharp minor sonata or the 18 Piano Pieces, Op.72).

COSA DIRE DI QUESTO INCREDIBILE COMPOSITORE? DEI GRANDISSIMI MI PIACE AVERE TUTTO , QUINDI ANCHE SE QUESTE PER PIANO NON SONO LE SUE OPERE PIU' IMPORTANTI, DI LUI SI COMPERA TUTTO A SCATOLA CHIUSA. LA PIANISTA POSTNIKOVA E' DAVVERO FANTASTICA, E LE STAGIONI SONO LA MIA COMPOSIZIONE PREFERITA DI QUESTO BEL SET.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely playing, lovely sound 26 July 2011

It's not that easy to find the complete solo piano music of Tchaikovsky, let alone all in one easy place. So this collection is welcome on that account alone. Add to this truly engaging, imaginative playing of these works and superior recorded sound, and you have a real treasure.

This seven-disc set is a compilation of recordings made by Erato between 1990 and 1992. The quality of sound is consistently good, though it varies according to the accoustics and microphone placements. Besides the two piano sonatas, many of these are smaller pieces of the salon variety. Some are written for children. There is an engaging set of Russian folksongs, arranged for four hands, played by Postnikova with Gennady Rozhdestvensky. The set contains brief notes on the music, including by Viktoria Postnikova herself, as well as detailed descriptions of the contents. As the pianist notes, many of these pieces were dedicated to women. Who better then than a gifted Russian female pianist to interpret this music?

Postnikova really pulls it off. She is charming where that is required, profound when the music is profound, and always elegant. The larger-scale sonatas, the tiny children's miniatures, and everything in between is performed equally well. What beautiful sonorities this artist can produce! Not one single note is thoughtlessly played. I'm not intimately familiar with many of these works, having heard some of them here for the first time, but I suspect that any of these performances will hold up well against whatever meager competition is out there. Even if you find interpretations of certain pieces you like better, you cannot fail to appreciate Postnikova's artistry throughout. The bargain price of the set makes it that much more appealing. If you are interested in exploring this music, you absolutely won't go wrong here. I'm in raptures ....

Postnikova does an excellent job. You can tell the style of Tchaikovsky's is similiar to his Piano Concertos. It's nice to have the complete works at a bargain price.
