It is a good idea to have the Gergiev Tchaikovsky ballet recordings together in this budget priced box. However there are some drawbacks to these recordings. These three recordings weren't conceived as one complete cycle that was performed and recorded within the same time frame, like 'the EMI Previn-LSO cycle, Bonynge's Decca series or even Neeeme Järvi's Chandos project in Bergen. Gergiev's conducting style changes between scores, and so does the sound engineering. The recordings of Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty were done in the Kirov (Maryinsky) Theatre, while the wonderful single-disc Nutcracker was done in the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus. Gergiev approaches these scores from a symphonic point of view, conducting without the constraints of danced performances. I applaud this approach and it allows the scores to cohere better. Yet I know there are performance and engineering problems that tend to undermine the two larger ballets, as I'll explain now.

Swan Lake was the last of the three ballets to be recorded. Gergiev's recording uses the score for the 1895 Maryinsky revival. It differs from the original score as presented on the Bonynge or Dutoit recordings, for instance, but tends to be inferior. It is known that the conductor Riccardo Drigo configured this score by cutting a good hour's worth of Tchaikovsky's original music and orchestrating some of his later piano pieces. I sometimes wish that Gergiev and the Maryinsky Orchestra had recorded both the Maryinsky 1895 and 1877 scores, very similar to what they did with their double-bill of Boris Godunov. This performance seems to be the least successful of the lot. The dramatic portions come off better than the specialist stand-alone dances, and the famous scene with the swan theme for oboe builds up to an exciting climax.

If you are in the market for a complete set of these timeless works, this modestly-priced set is worthy of your consideration. The performances are very solid, as you would expect from this combination of conductor and orchestra, and the recordings are of a high standard.

Another set worth looking at is that by Ernest Ansermet: Tchaikovsky - Complete Ballets (6 CD), where you get Symphony No. 6 as a bonus. Or you could buy both, and enjoy the contrasting performances.

This is the best performance of the Tchaikovsky ballets I know. Russian music should be conducted by a Russian, preferably Gergiev, and played by a Russian orchestra.

I disagree with yi peng. His review goes on at some length. There is nothing wrong with the recordings of all three ballets.maybe yi peng should change his equipment.
