Product Description

Ben Glossop, an eighteen year old between school and university, and Sarah Wilton, a beautiful young girl of the same age, have no idea what they are letting themselves in for when they arrive at Portland Court Preparatory School for Boys to be teacher and Under-Matron. But it doesn't take them long to realise that the most important person at this unusual academy is not the headmaster, nor any other adult, but a delightfully engaging twelve year old boy called Taylor.

Taylor can see the school would be bound to collapse if the negligent, and frequently inebriated, headmaster and senior staff were to be left in charge, so he quietly takes over.

But little does he know how many strange and dangerous adventures will come his way, especially when, much to his initial horror, a girl – Samantha Watson - turns up as a pupil at the school, on the run from a band of kidnappers.

Will Taylor triumph? Will Samantha survive?

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful school-boy caper 10 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
When Ben Glossop arrives at Portland Court prep school as a junior master he quickly realises it is not a run-of-the mill establishment.

For one thing the other masters are all quite elderly, work-shy and constantly inebriated which results in Glossop getting far more duties than he envisaged but he copes; aided by glamourous under-matron Sarah Wilton.

What Glossop realises early on is that everyone seems to defer to a twelve year old boy named Taylor.

When Samantha Watson becomes a pupil at Portland, following a failed kidnap attempt, the plot thickens. When Sam is kidnapped for real everyone looks to Taylor to sort it all out and so he does despite being hindered by the masters and Matron.

Will Taylor succeed in rescuing Sam? And will Ben ever get to the bottom of who appears to be watching his every move?

This is a simply delightful school caper infused with wit and imagination. I shall definitely be keeping an eye out for more books by Charles Utley. My only complaint about this book being that it is too short.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book. Can't wait for the next adventure 6 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a good read. It had me smiling and even laughing out loud on a crowded train home from work in the rush hour. I am looking forward to the next of Taylor's adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great novel - looking forward to the sequel 6 Jan 2012
By Dinoman
Format:Paperback
I was not sure whether I was going to like this book but I could not put it down and read it through in one sitting on a long train journey. After the first two chapters I decided to have a large gin and tonic and I did not look back, laughing out loud in places on my journey from Newcastle to London. It was like travelling with an entertaining companion. As some of the other reviewers have said, the characters are vividly painted(I wonder if they are based on real people?) and that is what really brings the book to life. I hope there is a sequel. This is a great "gin and tonic" book, and if you read it you will understand why I say that.

A brilliantly funny tale and a gentle pastiche of the school story; it cries out for a sequel. Pleaser don't keep us waiting too long!

Taylor is not the headmaster of the school, he's not a teacher, and he's not head boy. But even so, Taylor has more authority than anyone. Read more
