I followed the rise of Taylor Hicks through American Idol 2006 with my eyes glued to the television.
The fact that Simon Cowel overlooked this man's talent and that he only got through the first audition by a 2 to 1 vote , then went on to win the whole thing speaks volumes about just how wrong these so called experts can be.
In truth i would describe this album as a grower. I brought two copies
one for my mum and one for myself and my wife to share. I admittedly made the mistake of thinking 'what did i buy this for' and getting ready to flog it on Amazon. But, i spent a lot of time around my mums house over X-mas and she played it a couple of times and i found myself playing the whole album through and through.
The fact that this album made a debut at no.2 on the Billboard album chart in America and then went out of the top 10 on the next showing proves that other people have made my mistake in their thousands.
The three stand out tracks, in my opinion are: track 4 'Gonna Move', track 6 'Give me Tonight' and my favourite track 7 'Just to feel that way'
I would give this album 5 stars if there had been a couple of quality cover versions that he had sung live on Idol, but put that down either to Red tape, or Mr. Hicks moving in his own direction, or possibly both.
Ironically, with the risk of sounding fickle, the Paul Young cover 'Wherever i lay my hat' is probably the weakest song on the album even though i like Paul young's version.
I hope that Taylor is around for years and years and if you think that only Brits are the true stars from these music based reality shows, then i'm affraid that you need to widen your horizons.

Taylor Makes the Best Album Relased by Anyone in Years, December 23, 2006

Reviewer: Lon S. Roberts (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews

The heck with the naysayers who say this album isn't this or that. The fact is this album is all that! It's a pure album made in the vein of the albums of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. This album has a variety of songs and styles in the vein of Elvis Presley. Elvis was at any given time the King of Rock, the King of Ballads, the King of Love, the King of Country, and the King of R&B, as well as the King of Christmas and the King of Gospel. This album has great replay value and the songs will no doubt tranfer well to the live stage.

Elvis' Sun songs are among his best in part to their rawness. The same can be said of pre-Idol Taylor. But Elvis moved on to RCA and made more produced records and they are classics. Taylor's move to a real record label is the same. Taylor is in the big time now. Under the Radar was great for what it was but would be considered amateurish if released by a big name label. The same is true of Elvis' Sun singles.

In short, this is a funky album and a solid first release. And Taylor will make the songs the best live numbers in years.

A great artist makes music for himself and for the feel - commerical success be d-mned. Taylor has done just that. Rock on, Taylor. We love you! Taylor sings that he's "Gonna Move," and with this album so are the rest of us.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty average 21 Feb 2007

I loved Taylor's performances in Idol; his on stage presence was amazing, his personality and quirkiness combined with the unmistakable voice certainly made him a worthy idol winner. Unfortunately, on a CD you don't get the whole package and just listening to the tracks alone didn't blow me away. It's a nice album, don't get me wrong, but my expectations exceeded the delivery. He'd most definately be one I'd want to see live though.

And try as Taylor deserves to, he won't easily shake off the tag.
The emergence, announced by the most startling Ray Charles emulation from a boy with blue eyes, was far from the stuff of 2nd class Vegas caberet, and well worth a recording by itself. Harry Connick and Buble' made careers out of aping Sinatra, there was easily room for a left-field take on the ivory tickling enigma exiled from his native Georgia.
But the demograph of THE SHOW that brought Hicks to worldwide attention demands a different direction sufficient to carry 7 digit downloads, so we get a Route-66 car-wreck between Rascal Flatts and Bruce Hornsby.

It works but demands several listens to earn respect that it threatens to lose all too easily.
The collection is well-penned and as SONGs go most are pop-delights. But it all lacks sincerity or a faithful direction, striding too easily between AOR and bubble gum. The Runaround as an opener is a pastiche.
Hicks voice doesn't cut mustard and is at times way beyond the neck twisting performances he served up with TV dinners just a few years before.
The croak has mostly gone and taken the edge with it. Mr. Hicks sounds a little under-rehearsed and is frequently found wandering looking for an interesting path through the material before him.
The band is well selected, but never sounds like HIS band, more the seasoned house players for tonights "...special guest at the Golden Lion...."
Hicks can deliver and this is far from poor. As a first offering it is worthy of your hard-earned and will get played regularly, but we were promised Leona and got SuBo.
