The title track is very inventive and the lyrics are well thought of. It's good catchy stuff too. But the most excellent track is number 1 - Guns and Roses. It has everything a Reggae record should have and I can't stop playing it. You should include this album in your collection.

The most beautiful cd I have ever listened to! 6 Sept. 1999
By A Customer - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Lucky Dube's Taxman is the most moving, melodic, and pure reggae cd I have ever listened to in my life. With a voice that echos Tosh, and backup singers who top the I-Threes, this cd will give you chills of the best kind. Rock on rastaman!!!

Now here's a coincidence 31 Dec. 2001
By Mark A. Kintzley - Published on

Like another reviewer here, I was at the Reggae on the Rocks, in Denver in 97 and witnessed Lucky Dube's performance which sadly did not make it onto the live recording from that show.
This cd is a wonderful release by this unique performer. He does seem to have a voice and vocal styling similar to that of Peter Tosh and the back up singers do quite a job of weaving a beautiful vocal net around Dube's vocals and the instruments.
Guns and Roses is a nice slow paced beautiful reggae song with unbelievable back up vocals.
Taxman is a bit faster paced with some edgy guitar work thrown in. A pretty solid track.
Is This the Way starts off like it could maybe be a heavy metal song due to the guitar work, but quickly slows down with a Burning Spear-esque riddim and the trademark Lucky Dube sound. The guitar resurfaces and I could do without it, but it doesn't detract too much from the song. It fits.
Take it to Jah is a relaxing reggae song with more hints of Tosh in his vocal styling. Stringed instruments are weaved in nicely and as usual the backing vocals are perfect.
Mirror Mirror sounds alot like Prisoner from Serious Reggae. One of my favorites.
We Love It opens with a nice little drum solo and moves into signature Dube Reggae.
You've Got a Friend is a positive mellow track. Nice.
Kiss No Frog is so-so. You really can't go wrong with the formula Lucky Dube has perfected, but some are just not as good as others.
Well Fed Slave/Hungry Free Men has some very cool drums in the middle of the song, but the song is a bit slower than most. It is a nice song, but a bit too slow.
Good Things is probably my second least favorite. Not enough reggae feel for my tastes. However, it is a quality song. I prefer Culture's Good Things.
Release Me makes up for the lack of reggae feel in Good Things.
I Want to Know What Love Is...well...uh...I don't like it. This is my least favorite on this cd.
Overall a very pleasant cd and easy to listen and relax to. Nice mellow reggae from Africa.

"The most awe inspiring reggae I've ever heard" 2 Oct. 1998

Lucky Dube's soulful music brings a tear to the eye and "Taxman" is pure reggae. I saw him for the first time at "Reggae On The Rocks" in Denver 1997. I was incredibly moved by his music. His use of women backup singers is astounding and fills your spirit with joy. I now compare all other reggae to him. Sorry Bob. There's a new sherrif in town and his name is Lucky Dube
Most Beautiful Music I've Ever Heard 6 July 2008

I'm a big Lucky Dube fan, especially since traveling to West Africa and listening to his music in that environment. Aside from "Serious Reggae Business" (which is really a compilation) this is Lucky Dube's greatest album. It is a timeless piece of art. It's an album that will make you laugh, cry, and everything in between. It's smart and politically savvy, yet at the same time it goes down easy, you could listen to it on the beach or watching a sunset. Every song is good, but here is a quick review of my favorite tracks on the album...

"Tax Man" - Track has a much harder sound than the overall easy listening theme of the album. This track should be a theme song for Ron Paul's presidential campaign or a theme song at any Libertarian convention. Government is not the solution to the problem, but government by nature is force, and they derive much of their power from taxation. They promise social programs that don't work, and when they don't work they ask for more money to fund these failed programs. The solution is to get government out of the way and let people be responsible for themselves, deciding for themselves how best to spend of what they earn.

"Mirror Mirror"- I love the way he rides the track on this one. It doesn't even really matter what he is saying in the lyrics, you will feel this track.

"Kiss No Frog"- Song is magical, Lucky takes a common story and beautifies it. A girl growing up wanting to be like her mother, but has seen her mother heartbroken many times by men, so the girl promises to "kiss no frog" and won't fall for the fairy tale of believing it will turn into a prince. She figures it is "better to be alone and be happy/ than be with someone and be unhappy". I'm sure everyone knew a girl like this growing up.

"Release Me"- This song is a healer, for anyone who has had trouble forgetting someone who was once a big part of their life, but has gone their separate way. The woman who pairs with Lucky on this song has an amazing voice, and is not merely a compliment to Lucky on the track, but nearly steals the show.

Other great songs are "Want To Know What Love Is" which is a remake of an 80's hit, kind of like an African version of the track, the woman on this song has a big voice, and it makes for an excellent duet. "Well Fed Slave" is a deeply thoughtful track, social and political. Other people really like "Guns and Roses" but I haven't gotten into it as much as the other tracks, but with time I'm sure I will.

This album is 10/10. I don't think I've ever heard more beautiful music than this.

My oldest brother is a Dube fan; misplaced his that he had for years; this replacement CD made his day upon arrival in Palm Coast on Monday. Thanks for shipping in a timely manner. I would recommend it to others.

Many Thanks,
