Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

While most of horror-rock's practitioners dabble only in blood and guts schlock, Queen Adreena's Taxidermy casts its mind back to the distilled gothic terror of German impressionist cinema--Nosferatu or The Cabinet Of Doctor Caligari, where terror is conveyed not through visceral thrill, but through a slowly creeping sense of dread and the slow onset of nightfall. True, sometimes Queen Adreena's bludgeoning guitars trample clumsily all over their black magic fables, as on "Friday's Child" or "Cold Fish"--typical, really, seeing as core duo Katrina Jane Garside and Crispin Gray used to be in overstated panto-punkers Daisy Chainsaw--but such is Queen Adreena's tireless pursuit of the occult that Taxidermy still holds a grim fascination. Look also to the short film on the enhanced CD-ROM, where Garside preens through the lyric "I'm in love with Jesus / I only fuck God" like a blasphemous Polly Harvey taking to the stage in a Berlin cabaret. --Louis Pattison

[almost] like the lust child of pj harvey and bauhaus was raised by fairies in a wood, then formed a band with two glam-rock beauties and one hell of a scary drummer... it's been said that queen adreena are incomparable with anyone or anything currently playing music, and it looks and sounds as if that is not quite the exaggeration it might seem. 'taxidermy' is an utterly compelling mixture of harsh and melodic, katie jane garside's breathy, sickly delicate vocals contrasting with tribal drumming and distorted guitars to devastating effect. there are fast songs [cold fish, soda dreamer, x-ing off the days] slow songs [yesterday's hymn, madraykin, weeds] and songs which soar and plumment between the two. as if this wasn't enough, queen adreena are also one of the best live bands around, and even this album does not do justice to the unique dramatic spectacle that is a QA show- katie jane teeters between the personae of vengeful pixie and derranged little girl, clutches herself and/or her microphone stand neurotically, attacks crispin gray -the coolest guitarist ever- who simultaneously fights her off, combs his hair and thrashes zeppelin-in-a-blender growls out of his guitar...orson wajih pouts and glares while he man-handles katie and/or his bass, and billy freedom, grinning like a nightmare cheshire cat, pounds several thousand shades of shit out of his drums. this is the band i have been waiting for all my life...

5.0 out of 5 stars Who thought music could be like this? 7 Mar 2001
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the most haunting albums you will ever hear, mainly due to the angelic voice of front-woman katie jane garside, but also because of the abrassive guitar riffs and atmospheric drumming that combine to form a slighty scary musical experience.Queen Adreena are nothing if unique, and therefore comparisons to other bands are hard to draw, the closest link being Daisy Chainsaw; the former incarnation of vocal banshee katie jane and six-stringer crispen. however, they have certainly moved on since then, to a much darker sound. what is striking about Taxidermy is how diverse it manages to be, yet still retain a coherant theme to the album. songs like 'I Adore You' and 'Cold Fish' show Queen Adreena going for it hell-for-leather, with a speedy guitar, yet again accompanied by the other-worldy vocals of katie jane.other songs, 'Weeds' being a particually good example, are slow, melodic trippy songs which feature some of the most beautiful vocals i have ever heard. the rest of the songs fall somewhere between the two, they easily shift between the mix of fast/slow with ease. the video featured on the disc is also worth checking out, as it offers a further insight into the band, but particually to hear the excellent 'Heavenly Surrender' which is not featured on the album. this album is not like anything else you will hear, and for that reason alone is worth listening to. however, it is also one of the greatest albums i have listened to and has endeared itself to me like no other, and that is probablly one of the strongest recommendations i can give, go and buy it damn u!

Queen Adreena defy comparison. They combine elements of the Cocteau Twins, PJ Harvey, Siouxsie and Sepultura, yet are quite unlike any of them. The vocals and performances are disturbingly intense and completely spellbinding. Queen Adreena played our local venue on several occasions, a deconsecrated church which set the perfect scene for the band - in one memorable song Katrina Jane Garside strokes herself and sings that she only makes love to Jesus. We have been awaiting this CD ever since to play, replay, and replay again. It certainly does not disappoint. The songs range from intense, ecstatic and loud (Cold Fish, I Adore You, X-ing Off the Days) to quiet and chillingly beautiful (Sleepwalking, Weeds). Those who have seen the band live will recognise many, though not all, of their favourites, while those discovering the band for the first time are in for a treat. The CD is enhanced with a short film, some of which is live performance, and includes at least one song which is not present on the music recording itself (Katrina Jane's love-song to Jesus, not to be missed). This is a superb debut album which I recommend to anyone who believes music should be experienced not merely listened to.
