Product Description

Taxi is one of the defining sitcoms of the 1970s. This character-driven comedy rolled out of the garage with a full tank of gas as well as smart, witty, and compassionate writing, and extraordinary characters. The employees of The Sunshine Cab Company include single mother Elaine (Marilu Henner), aspiring actor Bobby (Jeff Conaway), hapless boxer Tony (Tony Danza), reptilian dispatcher Louis (Danny DeVito), naive guy John (Randall Carver), and mechanic Latka (Andy Kaufman). Judd Hirsch's salt-of-the-earth cabbie Alex Rieger solved everyone's problems but his own. Award-winning episodes include: Blind Date in which Alex tries to befriend an embittered overweight woman, and High School Reunion in which Bobby impersonates Louie at Louie's reunion to impress his mean former classmates.

5.0 out of 5 stars EVEN BETTER than you Rememeber It - SUPERB! 27 Feb 2005
After 20+ years Taxi is as fresh as ever. Funny, touching, cute and addictive. From the poignant theme tune, to the full rich characters, the great storylines, the wonderful 70's clothes, and interesting decor taking you back to another time, it's all brilliant. It is a shame that there isn't any extra's on this box set but whatever, this is absolutely wonderful and I'm privileged to own it on DVD at long last. Worth the wait. Exceptional.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must by for fans of great US comedy 29 May 2008
I barely remember Taxi whenit was shown on BBC2 ages ago,but i had been
following it on Paramount Comedy channel untill now,and enjoyed it immensely.
Now,finally Taxi has been granted a Region 2 release after being Region 1
for so long.Truly a great series with very likable characters and the blossoming of Danny Devito's career.A pity then that some of the other actors seemingly faded away into near obscurity.
A must for all Cheers and even Frasier fans,as the writing and pacing
shown here lay the foundations for those shows, and many others.
Buy it,and lets hope the following seasons get a Region 2 release to!

5.0 out of 5 stars class american tv from 1978 15 May 2008
First season of Taxi on region 2 for 15.99... is a great deal for anyone with good taste, with a love for some of the best well written comedies imported from America... I have been collecting Taxi for years on video, which has been a hard job, then thanks to Amazon I was able to buy the first three series, even though it was on region 1... however,I was thrilled, as I didn't expect the series to be released on region 2... well i was wrong... so here it is, (well the first series anyway!) which I will have to buy... If you ever remember seeing taxi, you will love the quality on dvd, and be able to enjoy some class, without ads or logo's,and have a chance to see just what an amazing team of people can come up with, they certainly were skilled... If you haven't seen Taxi, see how clever the writing is,it should make a lot of so called British comedy writers ashamed of there work... don't expect swearing, rudeness, crudeness, bad timing, dumb acting, or bad delivery of lines, for you won't find it in Taxi...I have grown to love the caracters,Danny DeVito could never eclipse his amazing work in Taxi, and I'm sure he would be very proud of it... When a great comedy is well written, it can be viewed over and over again, and still be stimulating... I think you will find it in Taxi...I hope you will see some of what I see in it, and hope you enjoy it... Thanks Amazon, and please don't keep us waiting too long for the next season.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still no PAL release for this great TV series! 27 April 2007
I cannot believe this excellent show is still not available in the UK/Europe

on DVD (Paramount Comedy channel are thankfully showing it now however).

Apart from the infective John character (Randal Carver) the characters

were superbly well written and likable in their own unique ways, but it wasent till Season 2 when Christopher Lloyd's Reverend Jim character

that the show really reached a comedic high. The interplaay and

enthusiasm of all the performers is inspiring.TrulY a great series now sadly overlooked ,and overshadowed by Cheers,of whom many a star cameo'd in Taxi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly indulgent & wonderful nostalgia 7 July 2009
I remember Taxi with great fondness, it was one of the few things on TV in the 70s that the whole family would watch together and enjoy. When it disappeared off the TV I'd always wondered why.

I bought this as a birthday gift complete with selfish ulterior motive! I'm so glad I did. What impresses is the quality of the scripts, how well the cast interacts and the film quality is really good for a 70s TV show.

Anyone who watched the series when it first went out will melt into comfort mode with the first few opening bars of the theme tune.

My teenage daughter also loved watching all the discs with us which I think is a solid testimony to the quality of the show. Once again, 30 years later, the family (albeit a different line-up!) gathers on the sofa to enjoy Taxi :)

Series 2 is on my wish list for winter viewing. I highly recommend this to those who already have a soft spot for Taxi - for others maybe you could look for a taster on on YouTube before committing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Consistent quality and easy viewing 30 July 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This comedy shares a number of attributes with Cheers. They are both set in a place of work amongst ordinary people, living ordinary lives with all the problems that go with that, they are both easy viewing, warm-hearted, witty without being highbrow, suitable for most ages, full of interesting characters and, most importantly, FUNNY!

The episodes are consistently good throughout this series. Unlike some comedies, this one takes no time to get up to speed, so beginning at series 1 is the right place for you to start. You won't find yourself rolling in the aisles; it is not that kind of comedy, but it will make you laugh and leave you with a warm glow.

Danny de Vito, as Louis, the sadistic, mean-spirited, yet human, manager of the taxi rank, is the highlight. My favourite episode is the first of the two-part episode regarding the cab that gets wrecked and brings back memories for all the drivers.
