Taxation has established itself as a reliable and comprehensive guide for students taking a first level course in the subject. This eighth annual edition brings the book completely up-to-date in accordance with the provisions of the Finance Act 2002. New topics covered in this edition include research and development tax credits, disposals of substantial shareholdings, the new corporation tax intangible assets regime, the VAT flat-rate scheme for small business, new rules on the taxation of company cars and changes to the system of National Insurance contributions.  Explanations are clear and supported by numerous worked examples. Each chapter ends with a set of exercises that thoroughly test the reader's understanding of the topics introduced in the chapter. The book also contains four sets of review questions, one at the end of each part, drawn from past examination papers of the professional accounting bodies. The solutions to most of the exercises and review questions are included in the final part of the book.

The book will be of value to both undergraduate and professional students of business and accounting, and will be particularly suitable for students preparing for the following examinations:

ICAEW Professional Stage, Taxation; ACCA Part 2, Business Taxation; ACCA Technician Qualification Level C, Preparing Tax Computations and returns; CIMA Intermediate Level, Business Taxation; CIPFA Professional 2, Public Policy and Taxation; ATT Associateship, Personal and Business Taxation; AAT Technician Stage, Preparing Personal and Business Tax Computations; AIA Foundation Stage, Auditing and Taxation; I com A Level 2, Taxation 1.

I have bought Alan Melville's excellent book over the last several years. I am a lecturer in tax on professional courses at the University of Gloucestershire and always recommend the book to my students as a comprehensive and well written general reference for taxation students. The writing is clear and understandable and there are plenty of worked examples to illustrate the areas covered.
Although it may appear expensive if you can only afford one general text this should be the one.
As a practicing accountant it also comes in useful for those tricky client areas too!

I bought this book as taxation was a major subject in my degree course.
I found taxation classes very demanding and confusing ans so i used this book a lot out of class to decode my lecture notes.
I found this particular taxation book the easiest for me to understand. It helped me a lot to understand the subject in a deeper sense.

I started using this book when I was in University learning taxation and I highly recommend it to everyone wanting to learn more about the UK Taxation. It has examples and covers a wide range of topics i.e. Income Tax, Corporation Tax, Capital Gains Tax and many more topics, and for the price that you pay it is worth every penny. I still use this book daily in my job as an accountant.
