By Sid Nuncius HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
The series of six discs of Taverner's greatest Mass settings recorded by The Sixteen in the 1980s and early 1990s are uniformly excellent and I think they are still among their very best work. The ensemble under Harry Christophers produce a fine, resonant sound which suits this music perfectly, bringing out the fabulous sonorities and high, ethereal treble which was characteristic of the early Tudor composers. The blend and balance of the voices is ideal and the singing is excellent, with a lovely fluency of line, impeccable intonation and a real engagement with the text. They are simply wonderful recordings, and their reissue at budget price is very welcome.

This disc contains the lovely Mass setting Missa Mater Christi sanctissima, two lovely motets, a very fine setting of the Magnificat and two instrumental pieces from the excellent viol consort Fretwork. It's a lovely, rewarding programme. I have owned the original disc for many years and still play it regularly and with great pleasure.

It is tantamount to sacrilege to say this nowadays, but I'm not all that keen on the Sixteen's more recent recordings. However, this series of Taverner and their magnificent Eton Choirbook discs The Eton Choirbook Collection: the Rose and the Ostrich Feather/Crown of Thorns/Pillars of Eternity/Flower of All Virginity/Voices of Angels are still among my very favourites, and at this price you're getting a real bargain, too. Recommended very warmly.

Gorgeous polyphony 15 Mar 2009
By Aquinas
This is really beautiful music masterfully (the high notes are heavenly)conducted by Christophers and sung by the sixteen who I have had the pleasure of seeing on a number of occasions at the Barbican. Keep up the great music, Harry!

Double Five! 29 May 2007
By Customer Formerly Known as Giordano Bruno - Published on Amazon.com
This is easily my favorite Taverner mass, and easily my favorite performance by The Sixteen. To my ear, the English Renaissance masses such as Taverner's are more suited to choral performance than the Franco-Flemish or Italian works, which always sound clearer and more dramatic sung one-on-a-part (or two-on-a-part if the twos are truly skilled!). The interspersed instrumental "moments" supplied by Fretwork (viol consort) are beautifully played and appropriate. This is spacious, joyful music. I love it!

Stunningly sung tudor music 19 Mar 2009
By Aquinas - Published on Amazon.com
This is really beautiful music masterfully conducted by Christophers and sung by the sixteen who I have had the pleasure of seeing on a number of occasions at the Barbican, London. I find myself returning to this CD time and time again- the high notes are sung in an ethereal fashion - I am a new comer to Taverner and feel that I have sorely missed out on the great treasury of european polyphony but alas in early middle age I have now found it. AMDG!
