What a marvellous book. Explains and simplifies the mystery of sharpening. An easy well laid out book, covering all aspects from what to buy, from the simplest kits upwards, to how to produce razor sharp edges on all your tools. A great book worth every penny. Invaluable to the woodworker just starting out or to the accomplished proffessional. I can not rate this book highly enough.

Lie-Nielsen hand tools have a reputation second to none. You would think that a book on sharpening by Tom L-N would be the last word on how to sharpen all your tools. This book gives a good overview of jigs and has ideas for making your own. The section on stones is rather sparse and the reader will still wonder as to a good choice. There are lots of pictures or how to deal with lots of tools many of which you won't use. His choice of a belt sander or linisher as opposed to a waterstone grinder such as the Tormek may reflect US vs European ideas. Seems a strange way of doing things. He makes the case on price, but his choice is almost as expensive. Hmm!

In short the book will give you lots of ideas, but seems to fall short of providing a good insight into sharpening practice. I was tempted to buy this book on strength of the author - a little disappointing.

Tauntons Guide 22 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
The book was delivered promptly, always a good start, and although I have not yet read it cover to cover it covers everything you could possibly want to sharpen in clear detail. Def a book that will be refered to often. Could have done with a bit more coverage on knife blades but still excellent all round
