Tauntons are keeping up with their usual high standards. This is a beautifully written book with plenty of clear well thought out photographic illustration. It is for someone who wishes to make beautiful boxes and would like a little inspiration and a wealth of technical ideas. Though machine tools are not necessary to make similar boxes, the book does refeence them heavily and give loads of lovely tips and techniques that involve them as they save so much timem and are the heart of any modern cabinet/woodshop. An absolute gem.

I am always a bit cautious about 'how to' books: they rarely match expectations and often seem poorly written. Most importantly, they often don't seem to know their audience. I would expect the same standards of well organised fluent text and imagery that I might find in a high quality reference book, and here, thats exactly what I found.
This is a very clearly organised, authoritative and well illustrated book. Like other recent box making tomes, it focusses heavily on the use of circular saw and router - so if you want a hand tool technique bible, this isn't it. However, if you want solid, workable techniques, and applied to a range of boxes that combine subtle and elegant designing with exquisite timbers and high craft, this is for you.
I found it very useful, even though I'm more into hand work than machining. High production values and good layout make this a book to keep and browse, rather than tuck away on a shelf and use once a decade.

This is, without question, a well-written and beautifully illustrated book. However, the emphasis is massively on machine-tools - routers, table-saws, bandsaws etc. For the beginning woodworker perhaps starting out in their garden shed (such as myself) it's almost completely useless. There are no patterns for making specific boxes and hardly any help with making joints using hand tools. The other thing is that it's American, a small detail I couldn't find anywhere in the description. If you're used to try-squares, tenon saws and millimetres you'll find yourself suddenly struggling with machinist's squares, English dovetail saws and one-sixty-fourths of an inch (I kid you not - why doesn't America go metric for goodness' sake!). The pictures are pretty though.

The book is a text book of Box Making techniques.
It is well presented with plenty of pictures.
I was expecting to find some specific patterns and instructions to make some boxes from start to finish.
I could not find any this book.
I don't think it is a book for beginners.
