5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent piece of work, 25 May 2009

This review is from: Tattie Howkers - Irish Potato Workers in Ayrshire (Ayrshire Monographs) (Paperback)
This is a comprehensive piece of writing about a very important era of Scotland's agricultural history. It was much played down by the tattie howkers themselves and it has taken Heather Holmes to bring to light the story from all sides. She uses maps, statistics, photographs and quotes from all parties involved. It's a valuable book in terms of capturing a much-underestimated link in the chain of Scotland's and Ireland's social and economic history. This book fully captures the hardships and the joys of working as a tattie howker. It's a wonderful read.
