Book Description

13 Aug 2009
This is a gem of a book. Sue Lawrence has interviewed 70 prominent Scots and unlocked their beloved memories of food and what it was like for them growing up. She talks to them about their families, their home and their relationship with food. Most of the childhoods of the twentieth century are represented here, and include celebrities as diverse as Ewan McGregor, Gordon Brown, Hardeep Singh Koli, AL Kennedy, Andy Murray, Sharleen Spiteri and Gordon Ramsay. They reminisce about their mum's cullen skink, their dad's roast and their granny's shortbread which Sue tests out and brings right up to date as only Sue can. With a mellow nostalgic tone running through the interviews and recipes, you can't help but be inspired to make it how it used to be made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taste Ye Back 17 Sep 2009
By FJM
Format:Hardcover
Sue Laurence is one of my favourite cookery writers. Her recipes are easy to follow but more importantly they work. Taste Ye Back is a collection of recipes chosen by prominent Scots but given an additional stir of excitement when tested for the book, by Sue.
I was lucky enough to watch Sue demonstrate a couple of the recipes from the book at a food festival; minimal fuss (even when stirring with an over sized spoon) easy to prepare and extremely tasty; the queues were long.

The added biographical value of Taste Ye Back is a page devoted to the childhood food memories of each Scot who has contributed a recipe. Quid-nunc - Sue also discloses the year of each important Scot's birth. However, the recipes aren't catalogued by year of birth but far more conveniently:
* Soups and Starters
* Veg, Cheese and Breakfast
* Fish
* Meat
* Puddings
* Bakes

Sue is an inspiration and this time she has been generous with her royalties too Headline has donated £1000 of the advance and will donate 1% of the total royally income to Children's Hospice Association Scotland.

3.0 out of 5 stars Food to die for 5 Nov 2009
By Ivan
Format:Hardcover
An interesting though somewhat standard collection of recipes Scotland that demonstrates why Scot's have one of the worst health records in the world. If you like fat and sugar you will love this. The book though is well enough presented and the personality touch could make it an interesting conversation piece. Just don't eat any of it.
