I bought this as all Royal books are beautifully photographed and it had good reviews in the press, the famous Eggs or Oeufs Drumkilbo being a highlight in the reviews and a reason to buy Vis the most authentic recipe. A lovely hardback book, fabulous photographs, illustrations and a nice size type and font face for clear reading (with or without specs). What sets it apart are the contributions of favoured and favourite recipes and the the anecdotes from the contributors. These are real recipes, not ones from Chefs' kitchens .You have a snapshot in time of the whole range of recipes that provided wonderful food, yes some luxurious e.g. Eggs Drumkilbo (I used frozen jumbo king prawns on offer from the supermarket in the dry run, very good and you can use Nam Pla instead of Anchovy Essence); so we will try the luxury version and the mustard and cress fingers are a must against the richness, glorious soups including "Lunchtime Soup", the easiest store cupboard version of Minestrone, divine veggie soups, simple starters that are cheaper than Mr Oliver's and quicker, and the Starter from Seville just sounds simple and fun. Good selection of fish including "Kippastata" and "Dishwasher Salmon", excellent vegetables and the "Tomato Summer Pudding" looks divine, not sure Corn Pudding from Canada is me, but fabulous if you love corn (make your own creamed corn by blending with some water and milk) and great for a buffet or with left over poultry, and a chum who is a vegetarian is borrowing the book to try a number of soups, vegetable dishes and puddings. The Puds are wonderful from jam or mincemeat puffs to gluten free chocolate roulade and fruit galore. Baking, from ginger biscuits, inevitable shortbread and a wonderful tea loaf cake and finally jams, pickles and pretty things.Read more ›

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to having a go at some of the excellent recipes! As a child I spent time looking at the Castle of Mey across the Pentland Firth from the southern tip of Hoy in the Orkney Islands and have enjoyed many visits there since. It is a magical place and this book stirs the memory in a unique and caring way.

This is much more than just a cookbook. As well as being a good source of ideas for dishes that will contribute to interesting and varied entertainment whilst not being dauntingly complex, it contains a fund of anecdotes relating to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and to Her home in the north of Scotland, the Castle of Mey. The recipes have been contributed by a wide range of people who were variously friends, acquaintances, and former members of staff of the late Queen Mother, who knew the Castle in their different ways and could add the colour of their own recollections to the picture of a well-loved place.

This book will be of particular interest to anyone who is interested in The Queen Mother and people who knew her. It will also be a worthwhile addition to the kitchen libraries of cooks of any level of competence, and at the same time a graceful browsing book for the coffee table in any home. CFS.

Well done Amazon for delivering this book within 3 days (including a weekend)and in the snow ! I have and love this book and so ordered a copy for my cousin's 70th Birthday present. She is a great cook and hardly needs another recipe book but she is already finding it a delightful book to read and hopes to try out some of the special recipes which may have been served to the Queen Mother. When you read this book you just want to give it to and share it with friends.
