4.0 out of 5 stars A training musician's delight, 3 Nov 2008
By S. Harbord (Aberdeenshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm currently learning to play English concertina, have been looking for the right tool to help me. Something to record folk sessions to practice along to, something to slow-down (yes a proper slow-downer) and loop and something to handle mp3's.

The DR1 has it all. In addition to the things I was looking for it has overdub facility, effects, metronome, tuner, great battery capacity, easy PC compatibility. I put this in my instrument case, and there isn't a musical situation it doesn't rise to. "Does anyone know this tune?" "do you mind if I record you playing that?" "do you want me to play that phrase again slower?" "again?" "Lets try slowing it down to 80bpm" and so on and so on.

The only downside - I'd have liked it to have had a small inbuilt speaker(s). I bought a small plug in one that works just fine.

Nonetheless, played back through a good system, the quality of recording is frankly astonishing. This is such a jack-of-all trades you may think it master of none, but this is not so - it does what it does very, very well. If all you want though, is a quality recorder, you might find the bewildering array of other features a little over the top, but for a learning/practicing musician it is a dream come true.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tascam DR1 Digital Recorder, 18 Jun 2009
By Mr. S. Head (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this piece of kit in order to record in MP3 format ( it also records in WAV format) from my digital piano keyboard, among other uses. The onboard stereo mics are of excellent quality and speech is recorded very professionally, with very little noise or distortion. The reproduction of music taken from an audio source via the line input or quarter inch jack for guitar or mic is first class. It is suitable for singers and bands, due to the high quality pickup by the mics. The added ability to add some reverb effect post recording is a nice feature, as is the slow playback feature which maintains the original pitch very well.
It looks and feels very stylish and is small enough to fit in your hand or coat pocket for convenience.
A superb product for the amateur or professional alike. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musicians! One word: OVERDUB!, 3 Nov 2009
If I was going to be picky: there is no built in speaker, you don't get a mains adapter or USB cable (but it does charge from USB and uses the standard mini USB cable) and it's not as tactile as other devices (the unit is lighter than it looks and the plastics don't have that soft "quality" feel)

But really I can't recommend it highly enough - very easy to use, comes with a full printed manual as well as a quick start and you get a 2GB SD card in the box. Recording quality with the built in condenser mics is really very good indeed - very clear, good range (in both physical and dynamic senses) and virtually no noise.

And yes, it does overdub so you will never again forget a killer melody :o)

This is exactly what it appears to be and does exactly what it claims to do. As a recording device for various sources I cannot fault it. Read more
