These two CDs are full of wonderful, passionate melodies, deeply felt and played with astonishing grace and power. All of it is something of a revelation, but the sonatas especially so, and not just the familiar (and foolishly named) Devil's Trill'. This, and the other concerto recordings by Soloisti Veneti, do more than enough to re-establish Tartini as a great and distinctly individual master.

Excellent Buy 22 July 2012
By Samir Sobhy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This set of 2 CDs contains an excellent collection of some of Tartini's work for the violin, as well as one of his 2 concertos for the cello. We have the chance to enjoy listening to 3 of his violin concertos, and 5 of his violin sonatas, including the famous Sonata in G minor, the so called "Devil's Trill". Legend has it that Tartini had a dream in which he saw the devil and listened to him playing the violin. This dream was his inspiration for composing the sonata.
Tartini's family was one of the most aristocratic families of his time. His parents wanted him to become a Franciscan priest. The Church introduced him to music, in which he became interested, but never in religious life. He got married in 1710, and that brought complications to his life (the details vary strongly from source to source), and he fled to a Convent at Assisi, where he dedicated his time to music, and later, mastered the art of the violin and became one of its virtuosos.
Tartini's compositions are mostly for the violin, with over hundred concertos and sonatas., along with some church vocal pieces, cello concertos, etc. He did not date his work, and constantly changed his compositions, making it very difficult to accurately date any of his work. After a long period of neglect by the music world, Tartini's talent and work are now at last recognized.
The performance by the famous Italian ensemble :I Solisti Veneti" is excellent, and the quality of the recording is very good.
With 2 CDs in this reasonably priced set, it is an excellent value.
