Product Description
The legendary origins of the cards are explained in this book, along with the diversity of the packs and their interpretation. Various card layouts are described for specific circumstances. In addition to explaining the significance of the 22 cards of the major Arcana and the 56 of the minor Arcana, the book outlines techniques for their use in meditation, self-improvement and magic.
From the Author
Concise yet comprehensive - divination and much more. This book is ideal for someone who owns a set of Tarot cards, and wants to know more about this fascinating subject (the information contained in the little booklets that usually accompany packs is helpful but very, very limited).
Tarot for Today includes a chapter on the history of the cards, which date back to Renaissance Italy (although there are conjectured links with China - but only for the Minor Arcana - which would push back the dates considerably, if proven). This chapter also covers the evolution of the cards, including the adaptations made by Magical societies such as the Golden Dawn, and innovators such as Aleister Crowley, so that the cards more closely resembled their ideology.
For anyone interested fortune-telling, a number of layouts or spreads are described (and illustrated) with full instructions for how to read the cards, both for yourself and friends. The divinatory meanings of each of the 78 cards is detailed in an easy-to-use format.
Many people are keen to progress these include meditation and astral journeys, as well as the more controversial topic of using the cards as the basis for performing actual acts of magic. Instructions for creating your own deck of cards are also given and, to this end, there is an analysis of the way the Tarot is actually constructed - including notes on numerology and the Qabalah.
Although the latter sections sound rather complex and advanced (and the information given is certainly powerful and extremely useful for anyone interested in self-development), the whole book is written in a lucid style that even an outright Tarot virgin can follow! With a strong accent on providing essential information, the book is discursive and reader-friendly in character (there is also a jargon-busting glossary), and aims to demystify this complex but highly reputable subject.
I am happy without their willingness to share their knowledge I could not have written this account. In Tarot for Today I not only pass on their legacy but propose some new ideas of my own - I recommend this title to you.
