Product Description

In the steam-fuelled world of Victorian London, vampires, werewolves and slasher gangs stalk the night and a man made partly of metal is about to discover just how far he’ll go to protect the woman he loves…

After a vicious vampire attack left him struggling to leash the dark urges of the craving virus, John ‘Rip’ Doolan, thinks he’s finally starting to master the darkness within. The only thing that threatens to shatter his hard-won control is Esme, his closest friend and the only woman he’s ever wanted. If the stubborn beauty ever realised precisely what was going through his mind, their friendship would be ruined…

For six months Esme has waited for Rip to recover and take her as his thrall, not daring to hope for more. Too afraid to put her heart on the line, she’s devastated when Rip reveals that he never had any intentions of making her his.

But when a savage gang of Slashers start causing havoc in Whitechapel, Rip and Esme have no choice. They must face up to the depth of the passion that burns between them and forge a new relationship… or risk losing each other forever.

“Deftly blends elements of steampunk and vampire romance with brilliantly successful results…darkly atmospheric and delectably sexy.” –Booklist, starred review for KISS OF STEEL

4.0 out of 5 stars great short read 5 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
4 STARS ****

This story features Rip and Esme. Rip is one of Blade's men, a huge mean looking brute with a metal arm and fearsome reputation. Esme is Blade's housekeeper and former blood thrall.

The pair have known each other for years and developed an extremely close friendship until 6 months ago when John/Rip was injured so badly Blade made him a blue blood. During his transformation Esme gave him her blood, but the event drove a wedge between the pair so much he cannot stand to be near her.

John has been fighting the darkness and dangerous hunger he feels and being around Esme makes it worse. He has always enjoyed her company but doesn't believe for one second she would consider him and now it is too dangerous.

Esme has been waiting for John to control his hunger and ask her to be his blood thrall. She always values his friendship, she is a widow and been treated badly by men in the past, but all John offered was friendship and wanted nothing in return however she has long past wanted something more and she sees this as a chance to get it.

Esme gets a wake up call in the beginning of the book when she sees John feeding from a whore. She retreats distraught, however John confronts her confused why she is upset. There is a lot of confusion and mixed messages in the beginning, neither one of them understand what the other is saying so things get muddled and it leads to unnecessary drama. John has little self worth so cannot believe Esme would want him, and Esme feels rejected by John when he pushes her away to keep her safe from himself.

The pair are in desperate need of a happier ever after.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great transition novella 25 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This novella is a great link from the story of Blade and Honoria to Will and Lena. It set up the next book very well - I couldn't wait to start it - but was also self-contained and worth reading in its own right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another loveable rogue 28 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Hot off the back of Kiss of Steel I dived straight into Tarnished Knight.

I love the world in which the story takes place, it is richly described and easy to immerse yourself within it.

The characters are loveable rogues whom you find yourself routing for from the start, great novella and fantastic series.

We got the back story of our leading characters, Esme and John 'Rip' Doolan in the first book and it was fabulous to have this novella plunge into their story and give you more of an insight into their relationship, on to the next book, Heart of Iron where I am hoping to be able to sink my teeth into Will's story!

4.0 out of 5 stars heavy on the romance, short on action 10 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There is action, but it definitely plays second fiddle to the romance.

If you have read the first in this series, you already know all the characters, and this is more of a tidying-up-loose-ends, than a full story. It is also very short. About 2/3 of this is the title story, the remaining 1/3 is a taster of the start of another story, designed to get you hooked. Grin.

Did I enjoy it? Yes. But not as much as if it were a full novel, with a full plot.
